My son put in a small heat pump system that only required a small vent to the exterior. Purchased it on Ebay for about $500 and installation was easy. He has been happy with it so far. If you live in the North, it may be cost prohibitive during the heating season because the emergency heat strips will stay on. (instead of heat pump heat)
