I bought a pair of 1964 gto backup / reverse light shields from a swap meet and i'm having problems installing them on my 1965 gto. The problem is that I cannot get the right side to fit, only one of the two screw holes lines up with the holes in the bumper bracket. I had no problem with the left side. Both shields are the same. Does anyone know if there was a right side shield and a left side shield? They should fit since the 1964-65 bumper brackets are the same. I appreciate any help. Thanks. Ron

It seems that I had a heck of a time getting on one side in on my 64, and they were the ones that came off the car. It has been a while but if I remember correctly I had to swap sides for them to line up but don't quote me on that. Is your rear bumber on already?

Yes, the bumper is on the car. I also tried to switch them but since they are the same I had the same problem with the upper screw going in but the lower hitting the bottom edge of the bumper bracket. I don't want to damage the guard by bending it and making it fit if there is a right side. Could it be I have two lefts? There are no part #'s on either shield so I can't look them up. Thankyou Halfway for your help and I hope to eventually solve this problem.

Ok here are a couple of pics, sorry but I told you the camera was cheap.
The first picture shows the one of the bolts that goes through the bumper bracket and into the shield, there is another bolt higher but I couldn't get in there to get a picture. The second shows where the shield attaches to the bumper bracket. The arrow shows where the bolt would be if you could see it but it is behind the shield. The "tab" where the two bolts go through the bumber bracket point to the rear of the car. The X shows the bumper bracket. After looking more closely I think I put these on before the bumper because I can't see how you can get to the upper bolt if the bumper is on. Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your help Halfway. I'll print out your pictures and use them to see where I'm having a problem. I think I might have to do what you said and remove the bumper and install it first.

you can put them on with the bumper on the car but it's a real pain . You said the bumper brackets on 64 and 65 are the same you got me thinking I didn't think they were but I have the bumper still off our 65 and have a spare set of 64 brackets boxed so I'll check them tomorrow . the shields them self are stamped different I have compared them . I'll dig them up a post pics

more pics as can be seen the 64 and 65 rear bumper brackets are not even close also compare the two shields you will see that they are different as well the 64 has a rib down the center and has a twist the 65 is raised in the center now the 64 may fit but if you look at the 65 it is notched on both sides because the 65 bracked has an angle around the edge wher the 64 is flat so if you notch the passenger side on both sides as the 65 is tou more than likely be able to install it Don

Thankyou 3 Deuce 64 for solving my problem. The person who sold them to me assured me they would fit and I belived him since most parts interchange between the 1964 & 1965 gto's. From your pictures the brackets look like they would interchange but the shields are specific to each year. My best course of action now would be to locate a pair of 65 shields. I appreciate your time for the pictures and reply. Ron
