I made a custom switch panel for the 67 gto....
...now it's done and I have no idea how or in which manner to wire it so that all of the switches are functional, as well as how to integrate it into the wiring harness (I'll be going with a painless system because of the aftermarket gauges and whatnot.)
just to clarify, this is a switch panel that is home-made and fabricated by myself. It is supposed to go inside the console glove box and the lid will cover it up when not in use. I'm completely lost, basically all of the switches with the exception of the ignition (I got that at autozone) were generic pieces from radio shack. They all have 2 prongs and I have no idea about the electrical system of my car. I've been doing great on my own for awhile now, but now I feel like I'm right back to where I was when I knew nothing and I first got the car! Any ideas? I bought some different colored automotive wire, a wire cutter/stripper and the quick disconnect tabs you slide on to the prongs. But the guy at radioshack was saying something about splicing the one wire into 2??? Isn't that dangerous? I'm totally lost. Any help would be great. I'm including my pictures of the final product for help. The basic functions I labeled were: ignition, lights, dome light, wipers, panel backlight (courtest light for the panel at night) roll control, dumps, auxilary, and a 2nd auxilary. Ideas? I'm so confused!  Making it was the easy part, I just don't know how to wire it. I'm not an electrician!Also, any ideas how to mount it inside the console glove box? I haven't figured out what brackets to use, and I'd kind of like it to be so that if I have a wiring problem I can pull the panel back to get to the wiring and all the guts. |

Well, it looks like your switches are rated for household voltages and currents (125/250v, 3-8a), not automotive (12v, as much as 30a). You really aren't going to be able to run any circuits directly through those switches, but you can use them to signal relays that will run your accessories.
Post back if you're comfortable doing that. If not, you're going to need different switches before you can begin. Mike |

Yes them are for AC voltage. Like stated above they will work with relays. I got a relay panel from Summit years ago and it is not that hard to wire things up. If you go to any book store you should be able to find a book for automotive wiring.
Don't feel bad. I got a budy who is an electrician and use to get confused when he first started on DC voltage. Not hard just time consuming, feel free to e-mail me direct my e-mail is in my bio. Pat |

I don't have any issue running relays....if that's what it takes.
Problem is...what IS a relay, what kinds do I need...and where do I get them?? Anything like that I'm going to tuck undernaeth the panel in the console glovebox, so that's not a problem. Bryan |

I read it but I'm right back to where I started...that was a little difficult for me to understand.
I get that the relay is used because the switches I have aren't rated high enough to directly connect them to the accessories...but still unsure how they connect from the switches themselves and onto the wiring harness. |

the switches you are installing will only be used to activate the relays. minimum amp draw.
the relay, when activated, will turn on any accessory you desire. heavier amp draw. you can, also, wire your switches to interrupt the ground needed by the relay to activate. then you will not have any hot wires coming to your control panel for your accessories. just the ground wires. with the single pole switch for your wipers, you will only have one speed.
and the wipers go to ground to work. |

dome light is another that goes to ground to illuminate.

if you are keeping your headlight switch there is no need for additional toggle switches for the dome and panel lights.
disregard this. i went back and looked at your dash and see that you eliminated the headlight switch. davdi |

Here is a link for a pannel that has relays and fuses. This would be a great starting point. Then you have to find on the wiring what wires went where. Are you using any of the factory harness to wire or starting from scratch? The only down side is this is only 4 circuits. The wiring will be pretty simple to splice into your factory harness if that is what you are doing. I really advise to get a book so you can understand wire diagrams. Pat |
