Hey all, I'm trying to finish up some repairs on a 77 Formula I just bought, it's got the Olds 403, and I was wondering whether or not it needed a smog pump to pass emissions here in CA? Is there a way to tell from the motor itself whether or not it came with one? Thanks a ton!

If it has a smog pump then you should see 8 tubes feeding into the exhaust manifolds (1 tube for each runner)...If it doesnt have the pump theyll just be capped off where the tubes should be

OK, dug up the old papers the previous owner gave me when the car failed the smog check:

CO: MEASURED: 1.85% MAX: 1.09%

Currently, the car has no smog/air pump and NO vacuum hoses/EGR; anything of that sort. It DOES have a single CAT. Any ideas?

You need to do some local research to see what, if any cars are smog exempt in Cali. If you have to smog the car, you'll need to gather every smog part that you don't have. Good luck.

I too am from California, but currently residing in Maryland (my 78 T/A is smog exempt until I return to CA). All 1974 and newer cars are required to pass CA emissions testing. If your car is an original 403 car, it was a Van Nuys car built specifically for CA emissions. You should have a smog pump and everything connected. To get the Hydro Carbons down, you can try enrichening the mixture slightly. Also, set the timing back to factory specifications using the procedure on the underhood decal. Unfortunately, the only way to pass is to fix everything. You can obtain a smog exemption, but if I remember right they are only good for a year and you have to provide proof of repair costs ($600 if I remember correctly) of a certain amount before they will issue the excemption. There are some counties in CA that are smog excempt (i.e. Downieville city area), so if you have a contact living in one of those counties you can register the car under their name. Back in the day a few $20 bills would "buy" a certificate, but now it's nearly impossible with the EPA cracking down and everything going digital. Good luck.

Hey, thanks a lot guys. My old/current ride is a 78 Park Avenue with the same 403, so I'm swapping over the pump and vacuum hoses right now. Hopefully this bird will be flyin by Sunday.
