I just bought a 1970 T-37, I'll be picking it up at Norwalk next week. I intend to make it into F.A.S.T. racer which will need to look entirely stock.
I'll have tons of questions as I do a quick cosmetic restoration on it. What motors were available in the T-37? Was the 330 HP 400 available or did you have to get the GT-37 for that? Would that have had the dual snorkle air cleaner and chrome valve covers? Does anyone repro the T-37 stickers for the sides? Mine is an earlier car with the stickers under the Tempest emblem. Does anyone repro the vinyl floor mat? I want to keep the total stripper look. I'm considering the idea of cloning it (tribute car!) into a GT-37 just so I could put on the cool rally stripe. What differentiated the GT-37 other than the hood pins, Rallys, dual exhaust and badging? I know the standard tranny in the Gt-37 was the 3 speed with floor shifter, what happened when you ordered an automatic? Did you get column shift? What was the biggest tire available in 1970? G70-14? When did they step up to optional 15"s? I think that's it for now.

As for 1970 models, I've never heard of, or seen in literature, a t 37 with more than a 350. I've never even seen one with a 4bbl but, they were probably avail with one. This was an entry level economy car, not a performance car. I have a '71 t 37 coupe in my yard. Your car is on my trailer I'll be headed east soon!

oPh is the man for these questions. As far as the 15" Rally II wheels, I THINK they first started coming out on cars in Jan '71 or so. Cool car by the way!

Digging through the old posts here I found this card which has a partial list of the options available on the T-37. I'm sure the vast majority of them came with the 6 cyl. or 350 but the card shows at least the 400 2bbl being available. I don't see why they wouldn't have offered the 4 bbl 400 as it was available in the Lemans and GT-37?

I'm not 100 % sure about 1970, but I know the 71 T-37, could be ordered with a 455 HO, 4-speed and posi, Dan Jensen has a 455 HO T-37. Everyone expects the GT-37 to have these options, but the T-37 is the real sleeper, you just could'nt get bucket seats.

All T-37 and GT-37 cars with automatic were column shift. Bucket seats were not available, and therefore no cars had a console.
The rubber floor mat is not reproduced as far as I know. I have seen the T-37 decals on eBay in the past, I even bought one. I don't think they are being reproduced either but I could be wrong. 14-inch wheels are the only option. Even in 1971. You could get Honeycombs in 1971 but still they were only 14-inchers. For 1970 I think you could go as high as a 400-4bbl. A Chevy 6 was standard in the T-37. The GT-37 option required ordering a V-8. Most (90%) GT-37s are 350-2bbl. |

The 15" wheels didnt become available on A body cars until January of 71, (rally II's) before that 14" only. 15" rally II's on a 71 A body is a very rare option. Im not sure when the 15" honeycombs were offered but you wouldnt want to race with those anyway due to the weight they are 71 anyway.
The T-37 wasnt offered with buckets, you had to step up to Lemans for that, this means no automatic floor shift. I think if it were me i would GT-37 the car, the look is much more fun for racing but do whatever you think fits you best. Either way you cant go wrong with the car you are starting with. |

Standard engine in the '70 T-37 was 250 inch 6 cyl.Standard engine in the GT-37 was the 350 2-barrel.You could start out with the 400 2-barrel xx code 265 hp engine as a option.California ordered 400 4-barrel w/manual trans you could have the ws coded 400 ram air III w/out the ram air induction 366 hp.1970 455 HO D-port engines were not avail in the T-37 or GT-37.1971 standard engine was the chev 250 6 cyl in the T-37,350 2-barrel for the GT-37.optional engines for '71 were 400 2-barrel w/m40 auto.265hp.400 4-barrel 300hp.The third optional engine is the YC 455 D-port w/the auto trans only.And last of course was the 455 HO.I believe in 1971 total production of the GT-37's were5,802 around 572 were 400 4-barrels,146 400 2-barrels,54 455 HO and 15 or so 455 D-port.My '71 T-37 was a 350 car,I still have the #'s matching 350 but put in a mild '75 400.

The 400 in 1970 was not the 366hp engine as in the GTO. It was the 350hp engine.

From what I've heard and read you could order the '70 400 (7040273,7040573 California) w/manual trans ws coded 400 ram air III from the GTO "w/out ram air induction",At 366 hp.As also you could have the 1970 400 4-barrel.

Right now, prevailing wisdom shows that to be incorrect.
The stick cars received the 350hp engine. Automatics received the engine reserved for the big cars, which had the small valves. That's not to say that the A-body's hp rating was the same as the GTO's. |

And you're reading this from where?
I've personally inspected one car. I know of a few others. And Roger has inspected a whole bunch of cars. All have had the WT engine code, which corresponds to the 350hp GTO engine. This flies in the face of what Sawruk's been saying for years. |

I even managed to get my friend to ask Jim Mattison about the silver Temptest that Sawruk likes to wax poetic. It could not be found.
Right now, I'd be willing to bet that the 6 or so cars I know about, plus Roger's testimony (he knows everything about these cars), shows that Sawruk has been wrong all these years. Plus, if you look at the AMA specs, it does show he's wrong. |

Just because I feel Sawruk is wrong does not mean I have a dislike for him. As a matter of fact, I spoke with him at the POCI show in CA.
