The stick cars received the 350hp engine. Automatics received the engine reserved for the big cars, which had the small valves. That's not to say that the A-body's hp rating was the same as the GTO's.

Prevailing wisdom huh?I understand all about the 400 4-barrel 350 hp cars.There are somthings not everyone knows.For instance the california 400 code XV 4-barrel w/auto.Came w/the 066 grind cam no.16 small valve heads 330 hp 10:1 compression.Also as above mentioned If ordered "CA" 400 4-barrel w/man trans,was rated at 366 at 5100 rpm.w/068 cam.Heads were the #12 large valve.Also w/4 bolt mains.You want to see prevailing wisdom talk to John Sawruk!
