Last night I looked in some old Pontiac sales books and catalogs I have for the 1970 model year and they stated (remember these are usually published before thay start making the cars) that biggest engine available in the Tempest/Lemans line was the 330hp 400cid with the Turbo Hydro transmission. No mention of 4 speeds being available. When the GT-37 came out at mid year, I think Pontiac's intention was to offer the RA III sans the ram air equipment with the 4spd on the GT-37 but some circumstance kept them from offering this combo so they went with the standard GTO 350 hp power plant with the 4 speed. Kinda like the ill fated LS1 RA IV SD (RA IV top end / RA V bottom end) that was to be available on the 70 1/2 Trans Am. Engine codes were listed but no engines or cars were ever made. All 70 1/2 Trans Ams with the LS1 option came with the GTO 370hp RA IV motor. They even used the same engine codes; WW for 4 speed and I can't remember of the top of my head the code for the auto trans RA IV.

Just to add to the mix here,

Years ago i owned and parted out a 70 Lemans Sport 400 4bbl automatic car without a/c according to the engine codes it was a 330hp engine with 13 heads, single snorkle air cleaner and no chrome lid or valve covers. The car was fairly well optioned with gages and a elecric trunk release. If i had it today i would probably have kept it around for a future project but at the time they werent worth much or sought after. I do still have the complete engine. One odd thing to note here is the trans was a 350 turbo and not a 400, I know this for sure and the car was mostly untouched.

The TH350 is very odd. I realize that the car was mainly untouched but no way a 400 or 455 engine Pontiac was OEM equipped with a TH350 until the catalytic converter era came along in 1975.

As an example, my '72 LeMans GT, 400 2V was OEM equipped with a TH400.
