i am going to buy a hvlp spray gun. i have been looking at devilbliss. i have 2 conventional spray guns from them and i like them. i also had a binks #7 that i liked.i would like to buy a kit for spraying base /clear coat. i see that they have a series called finishline that seems prety cheap, a gfg 670 plus and a millennium. im leaning toward the 670 plus. can any of you painters give me you opinion on how these spray or an alternitive?

Found them to spray very good LVLP is very low pressure to use 15psi very lo overspray 1.8 tip for primer 1.4 for BC/CC I like the low overspray about them and think they spray great for primer and color..but I am a novice myself with limited experience..

DevilBiss make good guns/products as well I've heard there finshline series are good

I can show you a few tricks on the spray guns. Lots of people sell the same gun with different names on them. Remove the air cap and post a picture of the gun.

Lots of the guns have interchangable parts. Some of the guns they sell don't. The easiest way to tell is the air cap. Even Harbor Freight sell same gun, one at a cheaper price and one that is more expensive. I load up on a few of the $12.99 guns when they are on sale. The cup cost at least $8.00 if you buy it seperate.

i bought one from harbor freightfor abou 30.00. i think its ok for primer but i wanted to buy something a little better for base/clear, do you think those guns are the same as devilbiss,sata or binks?

I bought a gun for $80.00, the salesman did a good job on me. The box says HVLP on it. When I saw those Harbor Freight guns for $12.99, I bought a few of them. I bought the $80.00 gun at a different place. The $12.99 gun says gravity feed, it does not say HVLP. The operating instructions on both guns are different even though they are really the same guns. They even use the same part numbers LOL.

The Sharpe Finex is a different gun than the other two. It says Taiwan in small letters on the back of the Finex trigger.

I use a sata jet 90 rp (reduced pressure) almost everyday at work and if you can budget for one I promiss you'll be very happy with it.

I know painters who will only use syphon feed guns. I have heard more than a few times how they hate HVLP guns. HVLP guns use less paint.

ken, thats what i have used forever. air is not a problem i have a 10hp 2 stage ir compressor in my garage. kinda overkill but it was new and a great deal. but i have also alwas used acrylic enamel. i want to use base/clear and since i am painting in my garage i really like the reduced overspray. i painted my fathers truck black/silver in base/clear. i used the cheap gun from harbor freight. it was difficult to get the paint to flow. i learned a little and had to re shoot parts of it 2 or 3 times before it was ok. i always have a project and i like to do things myself. i know what ever i buy i will use it plenty so i want to buy a quality one.preferably not from china. tom is pr less pressure than a hvlp? do you use a one gun for base and another for clear? thanks bryan

The problem now days is that you don't really know what you are getting or where it was made. They are getting good at disquiseing the guns. I won't recomend any particular brand of gun. I know people who have some shops and if you go where they have the guns at, you will see all kinds of different brands and guns. All of them are in the junk heap. I would not be afraid to paint a car with the $12.99 gun but it would have to be a brand new unused gun.

I have bought the Harbor Freight syphon feed guns that only worked good a few times. I bought one that seems to work good everytime I use it. I know people who look for the old American made syphon feed guns at swap meets, they buy them and clean them out real good to get them working again. If I were to step up and buy an expensive gun, I would want to be sure it was made in the USA. I have one of the Sharpe guns and it says made in the USA, the other one I have does not, it has the hidden made in Taiwan on it.

I use to own a shop and had 2 JGA 502s, a #7 an MBC and a Devilbis spot gun when I started my resto three years ago. An old friend still in the business let me spray his HVLP one day. That's all it took for me to switch. I bought a GTi Millenium and later, an SRI-W spot gun. They are slower than my siphon guns but I love them. Try the baggies with the GTi - I think they are worth the extra expense. The only things I used my siphon guns for are materials too thick for the the HVLPs, RoadGuard and trunk spatter paint.

The SATA's were mentioned, all painters at both of our shops use them. For waterborne use a WSB. Another line that is coming on is the Iwata's, they have a double atomizing tip, very unique, very low pressure. Either is expensive, and overkill unless you plan on using it often.
Have used the cheaper models mentioned also, keep some around for chassis work, etc.

Ken, the sata rp gravity feed gun uses a little more pressure than the hvlp but you can spray a little faster and I don't like going really slow. The gun is very easy to keep clean, I use 3M PPS system cups to allow me to spray upside down. This also means there is no cup to clean. It only takes about 2 to 3 oz. of thinner to clean everything, and I keep it sano. Yes I spray b/c clear coat, A/E single stage and have even sprayed dp-50 (only once) and it sprayed it great. I use a 1.3 tip,air cap and needle but you can buy others up to 2.0. The cost is about $300. A cost you can make back on one job.

I used a cheap harbor freight to spay my car. Did great til the clear. What a disaster. borrowed a Warwick which is a Sata copy and man what a difference!!!! I was talking to a guy at a Custom car show that he pinted at least 5 of the cars that all won in one way or another but got bets paint on one and he said that all he uses is the Warwick. $129 and its the exact same as a Sata. Cant go wrong on this gun.
Heres a few pics of my car when I painted it. I had never painted or done body work in my life. This was a heavy metalic color with pearls.

Ken...siphon feed has nothing to do with HVLP or not. Siphon feed verses gravity feed is the delivery technique of the gun. HVLP refers to the amount/pressure of air used. A HVLP gun can be gravity feed or siphon feed. A conventional air gun can also be gravity feed or siphon feed.
