What year is your car? Mine is a '79. Does yours look like this? Are we talking about 2nd gen firebirds here?

If we are, there is no reverse lock out. It's just an anti-theft device that also activates the reverse lights. If we are talking about the eyelet on the steering column in the engine compartment at the end of the rod coming up from below, that just connects to the collar inside the car.
From everything I've seen and read, the Tremec has an electric switch for backup lights too.
