hey folks, i thought it would be cool to have a thread that's all manual trans combo's, something you could stumble upon by doing a search and get a bunch of good ideas.
i see more talk about stick cars at the track lately, that's awesome, you guys who know what you're doing can help folks like me out. so if you've run your stick car at the track, post the combo and results here, and maybe some technique pointers too! |

6x-8, 1.77" exhausts, home ported. Iron intake, Q-jet, RA IV cam Stock flywheel Ram 6 puc disc Centerforce DF pressure plate Jerico w/2.93 1st 3.50 9" "Ford" 27x9 "Lightened" 78 TA. Maybe about 34-3500 w/me. Shift points? Shoot, haven't even worked on that yet. Between 5k and 6k! lol! 60' about 1.7x 7.7x - 90.x 12.10-111.xx VERY limited "tuning" on combo. My rear suspension hits to hard, but that was my only time at the track after putting in my 9" and tires. Launch with pretty good track prep and 10-11 psi in tires had to be at WOT and above 4500 rpm. Anything lower or part throttle would bog. Again, I KNOW I have many things to change to even get in the "optimal" ballpark. With only driving changes I think I've got another 0.1 in 60', and possibly another .2 down the track with shift point changes. Last edited by Ashley P; 12-05-2006 at 05:56 PM. |

Can all of you add what your launch type is and shift points.
That would help us "hang on and shift when you feel like it" kind of guy's!

69 GTO...factory weight (whatever that is)
455 40/over, 10.4 to 1 (heavy TRW slugs), KRE heads (85 cc, unported), Crower 60919 cam (RAIV), 1.65 Scorpion roller rockers, Doug's headers, RPM intake, Cliff Q-jet Liberty built Chrysler Hemi 4-spd (A-833 iron case, 2.65 1st gear), 12-bolt (Eaton posi, 33 spline Yukon axles, 3.42 gear, M/T 275/15/60 drag radials Only tried it one time out...12.8 @109 Didn't get too many runs in...real busy day at the track...nor got to tune it in. But I must admit being a drag race rookie. Launching this car on the drag strip was nothing like on the street. On the street...just walk it out, short shift to 2nd and still can't hammer it down until I'm moving or just light the tires. At the track...quickly discovered (once I got the tire pressure down to a level where she really hooked...18 lbs) that I needed to raise launch rpm well above anything I would try on the street. Started the day launching 2200-2500 rpm...car would jump, fall down, then pull hard the rest of the way (fun). 60 foots were poor 2.00-2.20 initially. Shifted at 5200. Also needed to prepare in my head for the whole launch sequence in advance as doing burnout, pre-stage/stage, keep car from rolling forward, get rpm up and stable for launch, with lights already going down (it all happens fast). Like I say, being rookie, took a little learning. But got better by the fifth and final run, which was my best time noted above (1.96 60 ft)...mph was always the same. Never could launch at more than 3000 rpm because of clutch issues (which have now been sorted out)...so always jump off the line, fall over, then go. Also never did power shift, ,which tried recently on the 1-2 for the first time with this car on the street, which really results in all hell breaking loose. I was a little disappointed with times first time out...though still had a lot of fun. Pitted with some real friendly/helpful racers (that was part of the fun). Anyway they told me one should be somewhat disappointed on first try at the track, especially running a stick car. If there are bugs in the set-up...all will be made apparent at the strip, which may have gone unnoticed on the street. I think the regular racers here will agree...it will take some time to get the car and driver sorted out. But I'm think with the car and driver dialed in for next time out next season...launching at 4000 rpm, hooking (maybe down to a 1.75 60 ft), speed shifting (5300-5500?)...hoping to get into the lower end of the 12s. A two-step and a line lock if your serious at all.
I can't do the one foot on the gas and brake thing, so a line lock is the only way for me to do a good burn out. And I'm not even gonna try to look at my in-dash tach while watching the lights, forget it. This narrows it down to adjusting tire pressure and launch rpm with the two-step. You can make it more complicated than that but I prefer to simplify it. 383/M6/4.10's 1.78 60' 7.82 @ 90.57 mph

Quote:
On my combo high limit was set at 8,000 unless I was in need of a better qualifing position at the cost of spring life. Usually left on the high limit and shifted at 7800. I was instructed by McLeod to do burn outs in high gear.... don't ease into the clutch.... let it fly just like you're launching it. |
