I use LED, works good and will last longer than standard bulb.
Guess have to turn it on, all of the IHRA tracks that I g went NHRA, Tri-State, Norwalk and Muncie all went NHRA this year.

I have always wired mine so it's on anytime the master switch is, this keeps me from forgeting to turn it on. I seen a crash a few years ago, the track lighting was poor and the guy did'nt have a light on, and they sent the next pair. Lucky no one was seriously hurt, but both cars were damaged.
