I have decided to use a Holley Street Dominator intake on my 455. Aside from gasket matching, does any porting work need to be done to the intake before bolting it on the engine? The plenum gets smaller just under the carburator flange and then enlarges to the runners. The first inch or so down into the plenum is almost a hour glass shape. Will opening the plenum help or hurt performance? Anyone have pictures of a modified intake? Thanks......Harddecisions

Use a ball mill and open up the neck. Run a 1 inch carb spacer for plenum volume. Are you going with a Holley or Qjet? I blended in the adapter plate for the 4150 into and around the base. We also installed a home made turtle. Great working manifold on my combo. 440 cubic inches and D-ports.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...reet+Dominator I have two, both ported by Dave Bischpp to use a SCE#128103 intake gasket that is about 2.320" tall. One has a Dominator carb flange. |

Steve, would you be interested in selling the one with the 4500 flange?

Fasteddy- Sure, call me some morning at 512-515-6050. Do note that I use the SCE 128103 intake gasket that is taller than most at 2.320". And I believe the ports are about 1.200" to 1.250" wide x about 2.3125" tall, but this will need to be varified. On back-to-back track testing with my old 450cid combo it ran 10.743 at 126.03 and with the Victor intake it ran 10.685 at 126.61, both using a borrowed 8896HP Dominator carb. Same jetting on both, the HSD was a bit dead out of the hole with a 1.604 60-ft but picked in 2nd gear. The Victor combo had 1.578 60-ft. This was the only time it was on my car and I suspect some "tuning" might help.

Here's some pics I saved for when my dad lets me do his, he's not into all the porting go fast stuff, just as long as he's consistant. This was a manifold that was sold on Ebay years ago... Thanks D. Miles

Here is a few shots of mine. I eneded up moving the 4500 flange forward about 1/4", made it a better path from carb to runners.

I did a intake porting story for Pontiac Enthusiast back in 2004 using the HSD to run a Q-Jet. Here are a few pics that might interest you.
FYI...I use a modified 1" spacer. The spacer started out as a 4-hole spacer. I made the secondaries one large whole. This spacer gave me 20 hp and 20 lb ft on the dyno test.

Thanks for all the help. The photos really were the ticket to success. Ported the intake out to the gasket line and rounded under the flange to give a smooth transition for air flow. One thing I did learn is that WD-40 will keep a rotary file (burr) clean and let you grind aluminum without the burr clogging up. In the past I have used burrs on aluminum without much success. Grind for a minute and clean the burr for five. If you folks are spending hours with sand paper rolls, try spraying a lubricant on the burr and aluminum surface to make the chips fall off the burr. HUGE time saver. Thanks again...........Harddecisions

ATF works well for burr grinding aluminum.
