Hello, I recently purchased a 67 gto with the rally guage cluster. The one time I drove the car the speedometer did work. The former owner said as he was delivering the car to me the speedometer needle was jumping around and was making noise. Now the orange needle is missing and It is not sitting in the lower part of the speedometer. My question is whats the correct fix and how do I get the speedometer out of the car. May be a good time to replace the cloudy plastic lens covers on all the guages. Thanks.

The exact thing happened to me. My speedometer had not been lubricated in 40 years and destroyed itself.
The fix was to install a new speedometer from a parts car. I got a used one, and sent it in to be calibrated, lubricated etc by Pete Serio. I should have one for you to use if you don't have an extra.
Definitely a good time to replace lens, dash bezel etc.

Thanks Andre, How do I get the speedo out? Do you have info on the restoration guy you mention, I am in a slow restoration mode. Hope my is ok to fix.

When the needle breaks off, it does not make sense to fix it, because you are basically going to have to strip down a working speedo to get a good shaft. Much easier and economical to replace the speedo head.

You are going to have to remove the dash, then take the gauge cluster out to get to the speedometer. Best to send one in, tell him what miles to put on the odometer, then when you take the dash apart, you have all the pieces ready to install so it does not sit for months, and the car is immobile.

Another option is to buy a replacement speedometer assembly. My pointer was bent! A replacement, which including the speedomter, pointer, housing, etc., cost me $ 25.

The bushing in the back of the speedometer will dry out from age, time, sitting &/or lack of use. I am sure that GM never figured these cars would still be so popular after all these years!! The original factory lube is good enough to last for 20 or 30 years but 40 is pushing it!! In my opinion all these old cable driven speedometers need serviced now. After years of use they will loose some calibration as well. (Magnet gets weak) & they will show less than actual speed & miles.
