I too use Fed Ex and find their rates to be better than UPS.
I'm work at UPS in the evenings and scan boxes, I have witnesed people kicking boxes and smashing boxes-esp fragile boxes. Our suporviser has even seen it but is too much of a chickensh!t to fire anyone. I use to work at Fed-Ex also, and there was not as much damages there, although one kid that came to work stoned all the time got mad and pissed on some boxes.
My advice is to either wrap everthing the best you can or use the postal service, which is what I do.

Sounds like it would make for a good episode of 60minutes, with some hidden cameras.
