I was going to put one in my FJ40 until I got a steal on an LT1. I was going to find an aluminum step van, take the 4BT and cut the body up for scrap and try and break even. Good forum here, http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php? |

The Toyota engine was knock off of the Chevy, GM sued them and collected fees for every one sold.

I had a 1982 Suburban with a 6.2. I bought it in '89 with a blown engine, the oil plug got left out at Jiffy Lube and it still went 20 miles before it broke! When I got all I could find was an engine from a medium duty truck, I used that, got a buddy that worked for Mack to tune it for me. That thing would smoke a 454 3/4 ton truck, both figuratively and literally! It was a 4x4 and would smoke the rear 32/12.50 BFG's with only 3.42 gears. It had a 700R4 from the factory but the torque killed 3 of them so I went to a t-400 until I got a pro built 700. A couple of years later a hurricane dropped a huge limb on the truck and totalled it. I put the whole drivetrain in my '75 Scout II. Talk about a beach burner!!!

I rebuilt the 6.2 in my K5 Blazer. It's a bored 6.2L short block, with 6.5TD heads, a 6.5TD injection pump, non-egr intake, and a much improved cooling system (6.5 water pump, twin t-stat crossover). It also has the Banks Sidewinder turbo and exhaust system on it.
The truck is an 83 K5 Blazer, D60 front, 700-r4, 14 bolt FF rear, 37" swampers, I had it on a scale and it weighs in at 6500 lbs with me in it. My advice: Stay away from the 6.2. The blocks break, even at stock power levels. The cranks break at stock power levels. ALL the heads have cracks in them. They don't make much power without a turbo, and they blow the head gaskets when you put one on. Yeah, I get up to 20 MPG, but that's probably because I had to turn the fuel way down to keep the EGTs under control at WOT. To put it in perspective: My 6.2 makes respectable power, for a 6.2. Not too long ago I was following my dad (stock 97 F250 powerstroke). We both stopped at the bottom of a long hill and then took off. I had the pedal floored and he still quickly pulled away from me and wasn't even trying. The kicker was that he was pulling a car on a trailer and I wasn't towing anything. I'll run this 6.2 until it explodes, then I'll look into a 6BT swap.

Just curious, where did you find the information on putting the HEI in the cruiser engine?

Then you just need to swap the gear for a Toyota gear, and machine the "lip" off of the dizzy shaft so the shaft will engage the oil pump. Make up some kind hold down tab and you are done. Do you have a cruiser? I have the distributor still. |

I didn't remove the lip on mine and didn't have any problems. I've had 3 FJ40s, but none now. On my website I've got a few old FJ40 modification pages that I wrote.
