Default N is for North

Always install the crank with the N pointing to the Magnetic North Pole.

OK, I'm done "bustin' your chops".

I think it stands for Nodular, but I would wait for the more knowledgeable on this.

Good luck with it,
Greg

Yes "N" is the designation for Nodular Iron Crank..
Pontiac made their cranks ready for severe duty.

It's a good one

389 cranks & ram air IV cranks are ARMA STEEL (much better) than NODULAR.
all pontiac cranks are nodular except noted above.

all or MOST pontiac blocks will have the last 2 digits cast in the valley of the motor
00 = 400 55= 455 28= 428 and so on... some are also cast into the sides of the blocks aswell.....
Heres a good tip MOST all of large journel blocks have a pyramid near the dist. THIS IS A STREET RACING TRICK... if you cant tell what the block is look for the pyramid. NOW the street racers know this & is very common for people to hack that off to appear to be a smaller motor

Is there a way to I.D. the arma steel cranks?
I have a local guy who wants to swap me some Pontiac parts for some of my old Chevy parts. One of the items he claims to have is an arma steel crank.

ive seen N cranks take a LOT of punishment i don't think there is that much different between the PM,AL,and N cranks they all are pretty tuff and can take any kind of normal abuse as well as some ab normal abuse LOL

actually, the 67-later Nodular iron cranks are better/stronger than the armasteel. arma steel was only a "brand" name so to speak and they are cast iron, not steel as many people think. arma steel name and iron type was dropped due to fear of misrepresentation claims and pearlitic nodular replaced it. i'll find all the arma steelcranks u want and trade you straight up for any 67-later nodulars you have.

Sweet Judge,
The valley 2 digit castings didnt begin until 1969 and the pyramid is on all 421-455 blocks as well as the 326's and 350's. Only the 389-400 's had no pyramid.
And yes as mentioned above "Arma Steel" is cast and no better than an "N" crank.

What this young man has is a 70-74 350 (dual - early/late motor mount holes "5" holes on all 70-76 engines) , windage trays ended after 74 (mostly 73) , 75-78 blocks are not drilled for a windage tray at all.
