I think the real winner here was Jim Mattison, he probably had the PHS packets printed in bulk! This car had the latest invoice date of any of the RA II's talked about here. Could it be one of the last ones made? Any thoughts on that? I could scan the PHS and post it, but i would have to dig it up. Scott

Hello Everyone,

I sat and watched the end of the auction for the RA II GTO and was shocked at the outcome.

So I have to ask... What would the value of a 69/70 RA IV Judge be that is in the same condition of that RA II car? What are your opinions or does anyone have any factual sales that can be referenced? Also, how much less is a car worth that does not have the orginal matching numbers engine?

I’ve seen the C118 date before on an as cast 2506 block, but can not see the Vin or EUN on this one.
Anybody know the block or seen the billing card?

If this is out of a very early RA2 car, I really want to see the ship date and what was charged for the RA option.

You could be right - tried blowing up the picture but it was too distorted to confirm.
If I had to guess – 28P311512?

I emailed him asking for information specifically the Vin and EUN from the block. but got a strange response. Just that he knows it is the first RA2 car, no other info.

Was hoping someone here knew the block or other info.

It would probably be welcomed mods to most buyers, but illegal in a PureStock Dragger.

The intake ports were matched to IV gasket in my opinion,by pix.
Exhaust Xovers were filled.

That didn't seem outrageous on price. Maybe on the higher side of a fair price.
It was 0.060 over too.

I don't see why they bothered posting Brians question. lol

Maybe it is the engineer in me, but the RA2 puzzle will bug me as long as there are pieces missing. There is probably more info in this thread then all published info combined, but still questions. I am starting to think that the 5C date does relate to all the RA2’s not just F/B’s

I would really like to see the sales sheets related to notifying the dealer. I talked to the original owner of the black RA1 GTO that I posted before. He worked for Lou Meliska Pontiac at the time he ordered the car. He swears that there was a notice sent out that explained the new engine, an order date for the new engine and the new price. He could not remember dates or prices, but he remembers it was a week or so before his car was delivered. He tried to cancel his order to reorder it with the new engine, but home office said it was already being built. That puts it around the first or second week of April.

Interesting is why there are so many RA2 firebirds and GTO’s unaccounted for?
There are more 63 SD cars accounted for then RA2’s. (And the SD's really had to suffer abuse)

Brian, the heads and intake were both D228, no 96 on the heads.

I was told the car was an 05A, Pontiac built 4spd, although I never got a BHC on it.

The EUN on the block is later than some of the others I have seen which only adds to the puzzle.

Whoops - correct Boss. There is an auction right now for a set of 96, non 96 heads that I was also looking at, must have been thinking of those.


I would be interested if the PHS had any hand written price memo on this one like Jim described for the F/B’s.

Am a little skeptical on a 5A build. If the Vin code is a P311X, I would have to concur with 68PONGTO at the build 5C. 5A should be too early to have a vin that high

I bought a 52,000 mile numbers matching 68 GTO hardtop ram air II 4 speed 4:33 car this summer. It is in very poor condition and has not been on the road since 72. I will be restoring it starting this summer. I will be looking to this forum and anybody to help with info on these rare GTO's Thanks Rick

I will post pictures this summer when the project begins here is some info on the car. Sold new at Setzer Pontiac in Chicago Il. 4:33 Sate-T-Track, AM radio, Retractable Headlights, Rally Gauge with Tach, Soft Ray Windshield, G70x14 Red wide oval, Ram Air II, 4 speed close ratio, Aegena Blue, Black interior. Built date 7-9-68, I just got the engine back from the machine shop I will post some picture in a couple of weeks. I plan on assembling it soon.
