Typically it seems the new performance cars mentioned in the lead post all have big wide tires with a soft compound right from the factory. This might not compare to many Pontiac street cars with smaller tires due to the room available in the wheel wells.
I have to agree on the Nitto drag radials not being in the same league as the other DOT drag radials. I use them as a street tire on my Trans Am since they are capable of getting decent milage compared to the others. With a previous 462 street combo I drove to the track and lowered the air pressure on the Nittos and ran 11.02, then put 28 lbs back into them and drove home.

I wouldn't put the D.O.T. BFG radial in the same class as the M/T, Hoosier or other current super fast Dr's.

I deleted my post to make a couple corrections:

a) I think there is a guy named Mike Brown that is running a Trans Am in the 8.90 range, which would make him faster than Mark Scordato. I couldn't find any details, however, after posting.

b) I am probably wrong about the Hoosiers (I was looking at a blurry picture). I thought Hoosiers were DOT approved, but at any rate whatever tire he uses for the cruise portion is the tire that must be used during the quarter mile passes.

Now that I think about it, Jim Filipowski has gone 7.90's on a BFG Drag radial (in street trim).

M/T's were. Hoosiers aren't when they first came out.

I have been 8.93@154 with the BFG and a 455. Didn't drive it much after i replaced the 428 with a 455, and still a pump gas 10.5-1 compression engine, but was tagged. Still 3600lbs and stock suspension. 295 BFG

My street tires are drag radials, I don't have another set of tires. I race the car as I run it on the street, and I drive it to the track which is around a 1 1/2 hour drive (each way). The car has no issue driving at freeway speed (75- 85 Mph). The car weighs 3880 with me in it, and has power steering and brakes (with an electric pump). I run the full exhuast, sway bar (1 1/4), rally II's, stiff gas adjust shocks, and 93 octane pump gas.

My best run in full street trim (drag radials) is 11.18 @ 122

There's a real nice 4 page writeup on Mark's GTO in the January 2009 edition of the Fastest Streetcar mag (the official rag of the NMCA).

Shows a 535 cu in Pontiac engine built by Bill Cerralli; tires are a Hoosier Radial 315/60R15.

I have been curious as to which realy street radial gives the best traction. I have Nitto 555s on mine and I can get a 2.04-2.08 pretty regularly with a stickshift. I just wonder if there are better choices that I could get in 18". I have 295/45/18s but could go to 305 or something. I know of a elcamino that ran the way I do and he ran 11.88 with a 1.90 sixty foot. I think his tires were Sumitomo HTRZ's in a 315/17. I would love to do that.
