Had the same problem with my 68 Firebird. Threw out the Soff Seals and switched to Metro Seal and problem was solved... Soff Seal was way too hard. Not sure about this issue concerning your GTO but I suppose it´s the same reason...

Kind of found prooblem I took a washer off the striker It had 2 so I went with 1 and that worked
Dont knw Y

but need another beeer
I been fightin this on and off fer a week
