Hello Everyone,

I have two sets of 1970 only hood hinges, Both sets look the same but one set has the bigger springs, my question is did it come with these or did they all come with the smaller spring or was it changed over part of the way through the 1970 build year? Also is attached pics, 1st is 1973 TA, second is from 1970 Camaro, and third is 1970 Firebird.

Don't have the exact answer to your question, but here's what I have in my collection.
The '70 VN built 05D, has springs whose O.D. measure 1.340". All the other '71-up measure 1.620 - 1.660". So at least at Van Nuys in the 4th week of May, the smaller O.D. springs were still being used.
BTW, I'll state the obvious, '70 Camaro & FB hinges & springs were the same part numbers, so no differences there.

I also have a 1970 formula with the smaller hinge springs on the car, Dated 1st or second week in july I forget which. So I don't know why these other 1970 hinges have the larger spring?

I have gotten two sets of this style hinge off of 71's, with the larger springs.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the smaller springs were for the fiberglass formula hoods.

Well, I guess I get to be the one to correct you. There was no difference in hood hinge springs between any of the three '70 Firebird hoods. All one part number, 546325. Then in a 9/71 printing Pontiac MPC, the '70 spring number changed to 3848272, & then 3907626 for '71-72 model years.

my guess is someone changed the spring on your 1970 set with the larger springs. There is a reason Pontiac went to the larger springs, personally I haven't noticed much a problem with the smaller springs on my 70 vs my 71. but they did change to the larger ones in 1971.SO my guess is, some previous owner, or their Pontiac Dealer, switched to the larger springs ,but kept the "70 only" hinge assembly, at some point in your cars life.. Just a guess, but agree with ric... they only had one style for the 1970 cars.. the small spring set up..

Was just looking at this... the first hinge is not a 70 hinge, that's why the spring is larger. 70 was a one year only hinge with the welded on bracket and small spring. This has been discussed on other threads.
