Hitch broke
So I hear this hellasious noise this morning. I look out my front window to see a telephone pole down , tangled up in a trailer with a crawler on it... It's obvious by the photos that the crawler was loaded way to close to the front of the trailer.. to much tounge weight, But it brings up a good point!
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRAWLED UNDER YOUR TRUCK AND TOOK A SERIOUS LOOK AT YOU HITCH ASSEMBLY... This was an aftermarket hitch on a Dodge Duelley. Try to imagine your prized posession on the trailer, and watching it pass you dragging your hitch... Or worse yet having this rig go left of center at 40 mph & hitting a car doing 60 mph hitting it head on.. Last edited by lazlo; 05-12-2009 at 09:44 PM. |

Yep....do do will happen !!
I check my equiptment prior to every tow. Check,hitch,air pressures,lights,tires,and retorque lug nuts often...Never take it "things are fine".....

Couple of people killed on the Bay Bridge (MD) coupla years ago because a guys hitch broke and the trailer ran into the oncoming lanes (plural) and hit several cars. They couldnt even dodge it. No where to go.

dodge thing
the same problem happened on the 01 Dodge were I used to work at about 250000 miles didnt break all the off way of though. They got lucky. Its amazing how many people just check lights and go. This is why the DOT is so hot and heavy on these trucks!!!

Ouch! Doesn't look like safety chains would've helped as the hitch failed.
Around here you're required to have a trailer brake battery backup with a lanyard attached to the tow vehicule. If the hitch separates the landyard activates the brakes. Uhh.. Why would a guy stand on a metal trailer with a downed power line sitting on it??
