Default Solar water heater tank leak

My water heater tank which BTW is on the roof has sprung a small leak. The whole set up is probably over 12 years old. I was thinking since my house has a basement which is unusual for So. Cal, and was thinking I could just get rid of the tank on the roof, leave the solar panels and install a new tank in the basement. The thing works great, I shut the power off to the electric portion two months ago and the water is always 130 degrees plus.

tank is on roof for a reason, its most likely thermosiphon
do you have a circulating pump?
You can buy some time and repair the leak with 2 part putty.
Just make sure its squeaky clean and dry, wait a few hours before filling again.

Thanks, I haven't even been up to see how bad it is. Just for the heck of it I called a company who replaces and repairs these things. He calls me and says OK I have an estimate for you. The tank alone is $4700.!!! $1000. for labor and Oh, plus material. I said "No Thanks" I'll call around or just fix the damn thing myself. Good Lord.
