Rocks and lack of air flow
.Road heat on a hot day radiating up? There is a kit too with a small fan mounted directly to the cooler also, just more money. Could you get a picture up front where AC condenser is? I also run a B&M plate cooler and I,m very happy with it, but it is mounted up front and I have no AC condenser. I run a BTO OD 200r4 with a 2600 stall LU converter. In drive on a 75 degree day trans temps never get above 140 in normal driving around town , stop and go stuff. Nice Tranny/convertor choice too .

All OE aux. coolers on HD ford vehicles (trucks) are the stacked plate variety,and I can tell you first hand they will fail just as easily as any other cooler if it's exposed to direct hits from road debris. In my days at the ford dealerships,I replaced dozens of them myself,and I was'nt even really the trans tech there,the trans guy would usually diagnose the thing,and pass them off to a line tech as they did'nt really pay all that well to replace,and they usually had more than enough bigger/harder jobs to do. But suffice it to say,my beliefs on this subject changed quite a bit after all that. I personally think that's about the worst place to mount the cooler. Sorry I dont have any practical/helpful advice to give here.
