Cliff,
The Ford C-5 (1983-1986) used a internal clutch, but it was so bad, all the rebuilt converters had the clutch omitted as they ALL failed. The Ford AOD (1980-1993) used a dampener that was splined to the direct clutch and was on when the car shifted to 3rd as it was driving the direct clutch. The ATX in Ford Escorts was similar. (The AOD lockup is very close to a Slim-Jim.)
