That diode seems to be only on the '72 models. I think it's there because the '72 switch performs two tasks. It downshifts the transmission and it operates the hoodscoop door, and they do operate at the same time.

That's what I was thinking as well, Jim.

I just checked my '72 SM, and the diode is not documented in the F-body wiring diagram though.

A diode is like an electrical version of a check valve. Energy only flows one way through a diode. I wonder why they needed it?

Edit: I looked at the picture and my guess is that is a resistor, not a diode. Those are color bands if I'm not mistaken.
