Default Vinyl dye? Anyone find a good one?

I just sprayed a pair of parchment sunvisors with Rustoleum brand vinyl dye and wasn;t too happy with the results. It covered after multiple coats but is much shinier on the welting than on the vinyl fabric. I have a pair of parchment door panels I want to dye bklack also and am not liking the Rustoleum product. Can anyone recomment a rattle can dye that gives good covererage and an even semi-gloss sheen?

The only one I ever used was SEM brand. Good stuff if you do the prep work. Cleanliness is key.

I just dyed my sunvisors black. I used shoe dye with the applicator in the bottle (read directions). When I finished I used black shoe polish. I like th eway it turned out.

Another vote for SEM. I used the landau black on my console and it looks great.

I always wash it off(or a good wet wipedown) with lacquer thinner.
It helps soften ti plastic to get more bite.

They have a dull coat you can spray on when you're finished.

SEM works nice. You can have an automotive paint store make up a batch of dye that can be sprayed with a gun or put in a rattle can.

Whenever I paint plastic parts I always use an adhesion promoter first. But I have never been a big fan of paint or dye on interior parts. But when you have no choice....

Cleaning and prep is key. I worked in an Olds dealer for 12 years and each dash or plastic trim panel I ever replaced never came in the color I needed and I dyed them and not one came back with a concern.

I guess its because I have seen A LOT of cars that have been done (most likely poorly) that had paint fade and chips out of it. Also i see a lot that have too much shine ect...ect..

I did mine using the Ames rattle can that is supposed to match the PUI interior. I have a Legendary interior, so the picture's telling me it's not a perfect match, but the naked eye is much kinder.
I did the dash (originally green) and the speaker kick panels (originally black) in this picture. I also did the console and the rear side panels (lower plastic and upper metal parts).
As far as prep went, I used a gray scotchbrite and wiped down with Eastwood PRE prior to shooting with the rattle can. It didn't turn out too bad for a D.D. ...at least it's a lot less noticeable than a green dash!!

Another vote for SEM, I always use an adheasion promoter, just a habit but never had any issues. Just make sure you clean the heck out of the panel before you spray it. Years of armor all are a pain when redying, I ussually wash my plastic parts with dawn dish soap/water and rinse with plenty of water and dry. Next I use a water based wax and grease remover to make sure I did'nt miss anything. always had good results.

Rustoleum? PURE CRAP!

Their products are really poor.

On the other hand, SEM is great.

Be sure to follow the instructions and use their prep products.

the best vynyl/leather dye without a doubt is a product called MAJIX spray
it is used in the shoe and boot repair shops and comes in many colours.
I used it on a white interior in a 69 camaro and the results were outstanding.
I have never used sem, but I have used marhyde products and have tried others with terrible results

You can greatly improve adhesion of coatings, dyes, etc. to many types of plastics by "flame-treating" the plastic part first. If you search this forum, you should be able to find the procedure.

used SEM on my carmine red 79 t/a and the light blue dye on the 81 t/a clone. purchased the dye from NPD for 9.95 a can and got the adhesive promoter from advanced auto. follow all the cleaning prep tips previously mentioned and follow the directions for the adhesive promoter. i had a 10 minute window from last coat to first coat on dye.the red plastic parts were done 5 years ago and if experience no peeling or fading.

I used a product from Sherwin Williams labeled Omni-PAK lacquer blend for Vinyl. Since my interior is Dark Aqua I had to dye both the dash pad and headliner (they came as black). This was done 10 to 12 years ago and they have held up well. For the hard plastic such as the dash insert I first used a SEM product called Sand Free and that softens the plastic so that it absorbs the lacquer better. So far so good.....

I also used Ames interior paint and have been happy with it so far. The jade color is pretty close to factory. SEM is also very good, used that on my sport steering wheel and it's held up well.
