This Mayfair maze 68 GTO ht was the first Pontiac I saved from the crusher ( little did I know at the time there would be hundreds more saved later. 1st pic is the 'before' pic. Second 2 was when car was finished and was selling it.
Bought it for $1OO and saved it, age 17. Towed it home and, 'for some reason', mom didn't like it sitting in front of the house. Father abliged and I was ordered to get rid of it. Not wanting to see it get crushed, I found a place to stash it for about 2 years when, situations changed and I was able to 'get it back'. This was the first GTO I restored, 35Ohp 4OO, auto Dual Gate, a/c, I was painting lacquer in those days and it was hand rubbed out. Quite a bit of work, built bone stock. I think I sold it for around $1,2OO. Just wanted to see the car live on. Did all the work myself except a handful of things. age 18 to 19. Taking body shop really helped as it was too expensive to pay someone to paint your car for you.

The bottom pic shows part of my stash at around the same time. 2 '68s, '69, 2nd '65 conv. '72 was not in pic. Dog 'Judge' in foreground.

Here is my 2nd '65 GTO conv. I restored this one after I sold the '68 in prior post. My 1st '65 GTO drop top was totalled when hit hard from behind on Central ave cruising. 2 guys were street racing and one of them rammed me and my girlfriend and destroyed the GTO.
With some diligent searching, I found another '65 GTO in a wrecking yard that had a nice body. The engine, trans, and front end were already sold so it was a perfect car to build with the parts off of my 1st 65 as a donor. I scrapped the 1st one after stripping it out completely to build the second one. Still, I wish there was a way I could have kept it.
This one I restored with Montero red laquer, red int, rally gauges, including a NOS wood dash insert I was still able to buy new at the dealer! Tilt, ralley 1s, tri power, console, ps and pb. It was a 4 speed but, for money reason, built the car with the HD Dearborn 3 speed. Forgot how much I got for this one, maybe $4,OOO in 1981. The only thing I did not do myself was have the top installed.
After this car, I said good bye to 64 to 67 GTOs and concentrated on the 68 to 72s as I liked them much better. By the mid 9O's I was back to collecting the 64 to 67s though.
That is me in the car, 2O or 21 years old.

By 1981 or so, got interested in autocrossing and built this 69 GTO to handle pretty good. I got engaged in this car but, things did not work out and we went our own ways.
Painted it Carousel red lacquer, parchment int, 4OO, auto, posi, big sway bars, disc brakes, 8 1/2" wide DIA mags, etc, etc, etc. Did all the work myself on this one too.
Forgot how much I sold it for, probably around 1981 or 1982.

great pics, I love vintage 80's pics since that is when I got my first car, 71 firebird. Anway I understand the hand rubbed lacquer, I was too poor to afford a buffer and had to wet sand and hand rub mine as well, that things was like a mirror though.

here is a pic I always thought was cool of my brothers 72 firebird, circa 1986, my bird was very similar (buccaneer red)
