Question RA II Head Bolts?

Hey Everyone,

I am assembling my RA II engine for the GTO and am looking for information as to what would be the correct head bolts. I have attached a picture of the two head bolts in question. My questions on these head bolts are listed below....

1. The pictures that I have of the other 68 RA II cars show only the bolts without the stud on top. Does anyone else have any pictures of RA II GTO's that show the correct head bolts that I shoud be using?

2. If I am supposed to be using the bolts with the studs, what attaches to it?

3. Are the head bolts in this location different than a regular D port head?

4. If they are not different does anyone out there have two that match the bolt without the stud.

Thanks In Advance For Your Help!!!!

You can buy the repops from thepartsplace but they are made for the 69 and 70. The 68, as far as i know, only have 1 stud for the ground cable on the passenger side toward the front (short one for firebird), or the the long one on driver side in front for gto. I put one together for a freind and had the studs machined off to match the other bolts. The 2 on the right had studs, the one on the left is an original. Good luck finding originals!

There are three studded headbolts on the driver's side on my D port, standard 400. One on the front exhaust port, the second is between the 1 and 3 sparkplugs and the third is between the 5 and 7 plugs.
The front one is for the negative battery cable and the other two are for the preheather shroud (I think!). The third one also holds the starter wire tube on non ram-air cars.
I have no idea whether the '68 RAII were setup the same way but for the driver's side at least, I think they all had the battery post and the preheater shroud so....I'd expect the bolts wouldn't be hard to find.
If you want them without the studs, I would think you could use any headbolt of the right length made for a Pontiac 400?

The Ram Air II used the same long bolts in the exhaust port locations as the Ram Air IV engines, they are longer than the standard D-port bolts. I have only seen the studded bolts used at the drivers side front location and the center exhaust port on the passenger side. As was mentioned in a previous post these are reproduced but if you are looking to be correct the bulls eye mark is the proper marking, the reproductions do not have this mark but yet they call them correct?...maybe but i've never seen it.

Well, that explains why there's no studs on the bolts for the preheater...lol

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the information!!!

Muscle Collector, the pictures you posted seem to be correct. I have talked with another RA II GTO owner and his is the same way. His car still had the heat shield in place. From what he said, these cars were dilivered with the regular air cleaner on the engine with the ram air components in the trunk therefore the car should have the heat shield. The heat shield attaches to the studs on the head bolts. Now I have to get a heat shield.

Thanks Again!!!
