1977 Trans Am 400 XA engine - just rebuilt
1977 Trans Am 400 engine
Code XA Date = D287 6X - 4 heads Date = C287 Bored .030, boiled, all new freeze plugs, crank cut 10/10 and polished, new cam bearings. Rods stock, new TRW flat tops. New high pressure oil pump, pick up tube tack welded on. Clevite bearings, double roller timing chain set, rebuilt heads with valve job. New Comp 272 cam, lifters and dual springs with adjustable rocker arms. I bought the engine already rebuilt for a project that has been sold. It was an unpaid machine shop deal with another motor, so no receipt came with it. I checked inside the oil pan and removed one head to verify and take a few pictures. Then assembled and started on test stand with special break in oil. It has run over an hour before the video was made today. This was a 30 degree cold start and warm up. Everything is good to go. You get the long block oil pan to intake: NOT INCLUDED: carb exhaust manifolds flywheel distributor pulleys, brackets, alt or starter Asking $1600 and you know a machine shop bill and the new parts cost double that. Local pick up is best Can ship at buyers expense. 860-379-2688 if you are ready to buy a rebuilt 400 for $1600 and have questions. If I was closer, I'd snap that up for that price.

Thanks.
Got a comment about the video - running lean, pop through carb, puff of smoke at the end. YES - the motor has been broken in for about an hour, but not tuned in - it's been too cold! It had sat on that stand about 2 weeks before we made that video on a 30 degree day. It has a Q-jet with no choke - so, yup, it popped and coughed a little while warming up to ~ 140 degrees. And some hot oil puffed through the valve cover hole when shut off. Even some paint burning still. It all seems pretty normal to me. Sure - you will want to do things to it for your car - but the long block is ready to drop in. Tins, pumps, distributors, carbs - if you can't swap those or torque bolts and adjust rocker arms maybe you shouldn't be buying a motor I don't get it - buy a rebuilt motor never started or seeing inside it - or one that has proven to run good with oil pressure and compression and not rapping - for a grand!! Used 400's are near that much....anybody need an engine? |

I do need a 400, that's why location suck. Good luck with the sale, it's a steal.

replied - thanks!
I understand a buyer being cautious about an engine with no gaurantee or they did not build themself. I bought this long block before it was ever started for $1300 and had it shipped to me. At that price I felt it was worth the risk. Then all the work getting it running. Now I can say it does run, and seems fine. I feel at this price, knowing just the specs, pictures and the video clip - you just can't go wrong. |
