Hello,
we are taking apart a 69 gto conv with manual 4 speed muncie transmission. engine and transmission are out of the engine bay. How do we take the the transmisson off the clutch and the motor? it came a little apart when prying with a piece of soft wood and stopped there, and doesnot want to come off? any tricks? how do we avoid the bolts scratching the opening? thanks, Andy |

Maybe the throwout bearing isn't letting the transmission slide out. Can you move the clutch fork?

Should be able to wiggle the transmission off the bellhousing. Clutch disc might be binding, trans imput shaft might be stuck on the pilot bearing.

thanks for comments, yes it my be that the throwout bearing got stuck on the shaft. any ideas how release that? everythink is hidden. I am not confident using pry bars on the aluminum houses,
the clutch fork moves very little. thanks |

i assume youre not going to be re-using the clutch itself, the disc?
if so, zap the TO bearing where it rides with your favorite penetrant - lquidwrench, pb blaster, etc., and let it soak. repeat as needed.

Pull the rubber boot off of the clutch fork, spray alot of penetrant, enough so it is dripping into the pan you have on the floor. Find something else to do, don't rush. May have to spray several times. Sometimes let soak overnight. Many Muncies, and bellhousings, have broken cases. It might help if you can remove the clutch fork from the bellhousing. Don't bend the retaining clip.

DONE!!!
the last bearing got stock on the shaft. that is why we could pull the shaft a little forward, the bearing didnt let it slide through the clutch. we gained some space at the flywheel, took the screws out, so clutch and gearbox all came off. thanks again |
