The lower cable on mine would break every 10,000 miles, after 2 times I went to the dealer and bought a 1970 1 piece unit and never had another break.

I'm thinking the 3 speed and the 4 speed cables are different. 3 speed in 1970 should have speedo hooking up on the passenger side of the tail housing. 4 speed in 1970 was driver's side.
