Also, the four speed automatic, as found in Bonneville & Star Chief, has 1st and 2nd gear mated together internally. When the gear selector is in "L", you get both. You are out of 1st by 10 mph. If you have one of these and you pay close attention, you can hear and feel the embedded shift.

Just to clarify, is this idea for a '61 Vent? If so, you need to open up your trans tunnel with at least a BFH, if not a torch.
