Yes before they tear down these icons of Pontiac history, I thought I'd take this pic of my car in front of the place where the body was assembled.

Just to follow up on this thought: many of these buildings have stood vacant and dormant for many many years....but not any more.

There has been a huge push to dismantle these buildings in the Pontiac area and work has begun on the Baldwin/Joslyn/Montcalm facility. Starting at the north end the Shipping Building (#16) and the Metal Stamping plant (#15) are now gone and only piles of debris remain.

Following Norm's lead I'll get the GTO over to Baldwin Rd for some pics. Hopefully it won't be too late.

I was always under the impression (from reading The Big "Little GTO" Book & Wangers' "Glory Days") that Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac dealership, home of the Bobcats, was flattened into a parking lot - I guess not?

Nope. Building complex is still standing at 400 N Main in Royal Oak. The city is currently trying to figure out what to do with it now that Jim Fresard has vacated.

Thanks Keith - another mecca I have to travel to when I get to Detroit I guess. Good to know it is still there; yes your pics prompted my confusion. These places should be given some historic recognition in and around Detroit - they are a big part of the history & culture of the city. Too bad.

I like hearing about places like this,but seeing it in person would be even better. Sign me up to for a tour If you ever do this.

Thanks Keith... My wife Patti were in Troy, MI. for a Tucker Car Club Convention. Keith came by after work on a Thursday and took us on his tour. We went through the Detroit area sites. By the time we got to Pontiac a huge storm rolled in . Keith was driving my 2003 Silverado SS. My truck kind of morphed into a boat as we were suddenly driving through nearly a foot of water. Eventually we made it to the Fisher Body Plant building, the last remaining original building of the Pontiac Complex. After that he drove us to his house. A power outage there cancelled my inspection of his classic cars. Because of the darkness the only way I saw his cars was by the flash of my camera. In closing all I want to say is, not only is Keith a great guy, but his wife and kids are terrific as well.

A few years ago I was given this book, "The American Car Dealership" by Robert Genat.

I am attaching pictures of the GM Dealership recommended layout (right after WWII) from the book.

I highly recommend the book, it is full of great old dealership pictures and a very good read!
