The new Hemmings Muscle Machines ((Dec 2011) just arrived. Lots of coverage of the Pure Stocks! Rick Mahoney's 68 RAII features prominently. They lined him up against the baddest Camaro of them all; Eric Simpson's 1969 ZL1 427 Camaro.
Rick's RAII ran right with the ZL1, both cranking in the 11.80-11.90 range, and the RAII trapped a full mph more than the ZL1. Rick's RAII has run a best of 11.18 @ 122 mph, Eric's ZL1 an 11.52 @ 118 mph. Of course, as we know, the Pure Stocks aren't truly "pure stock", but.....they all follow the same rules, and it's great to see a 400 Firebird up front with the traditional "big guns" like the ZL1, 440+6, and Hemi cars. Rick did a fantastic job.

![]() http://www.fastraces.org/fastraces/f...3!OpenDocument There was a thread on the Buick board about Rick's car. There are a lot of ticked off Buick guys that are outraged that a "little 400" could run so fast, so they all accused him of cheating. I'm not sure why they were so upset, but I guess some were ticked off because no one had heard of Rick until a couple years ago, and suddenly he appears, and kicks butt. Jim and Frank Mino's Ram Air II cars dominating way back in the 80's at these Pure Stock events, but perhaps some of the younger Buick racers just got into the Pure Stock thing in the past 10 years, so they aren't aware of the history.

Thanks for links/pics Mike.
![]() Great looking Car. Super Color ! Almost Unreal that its That Fast - so i can see the Buick boys and pretty much everybody else - screaming cheater. lol About like we'd flip out over a 68 Olds RamRod350 or 70 Olds Rallye350 putting down Mahoney or Mino or Bruno. Ram II is just a mysterious/taboo kinda thing. They really hurt people. Mino got his bolts undone at least once. He was Clean ! I'd call the All Aluminum 427 with Big Holley a cheat package. Or the 426 with Hemispherical chambers and 2-4's a cheat package. But not a full cast iron 400 with single QJet. So proud of our guys and what they're doing out there !
