the answer to both those questions are yes of course they are
but the problem lies in having the body shop supply the towing company as they use the lowest priced company they can find so they can usually bump up the towing charges and make a dollar on that also.
there are low end towers just like there are low ends in every business.
if a cut rate price is achieved,,along with it comes a cut rate knowledge of the occupation
its just common sense,,,you get what you pay for

First of all, I wasn’t trying to lay blame on anyone for anything, I was just adding to the thread about "Dumbest Car people you've ever met", which I think this gets my vote.

Secondly, you are right about the body shop hiring a Bozo, however, "common sense" told me that after $30,000 + at this shop I didn’t have to worry. I certainly expected better and they heard about it before the car was even unloaded.

I work at a place that repairs/services all makes of vehicles, and I don't even park where I work because of "some" wrecker driver's, along with motor home "pilots". The company we use has a couple of people who are very professional. They are careful with people's vehicles and treat them with care. However, some of them that customers use, usually the "cheap" ones, would place broken down cars sideways within inches of my car or any other vehicle that is parked there. When I had to climb in the passenger side of my Cutlass one day just to leave work, I stopped parking there, and park at the medical center or the drug store next door now. The majority of people driving motor homes do the same sort of thing. They have actually "carefully" backed into people's cars' before. A lot of them shouldn't even be behind the wheel of a car anymore, let alone something the size of a bus.

Younger people nowadays don't seem to have a clue as to the size of some of the old real "full size" (standard size) cars were before the first round of "downsizing"- which occured likely 10-15 years before they were even born. At about age 19 I was dating a girl and we went a bbq to met some of her family. Her uncle noticed my 79 firebird, and we started talking about engines and this guy started an argument with me about how you could take 326 heads and put them on a 327 because they had bigger valves. We argued for fifteen minutes about this. Then two years ago I ran into him at a local sandblaster, he didn't remember me, but then I asked him how his 327 was with the 326 heads, and told me to leave, and not come back.

Well, I'm out one day in my 58 Parisienne, and stopped at a light, guy in the next cars shouts out "is that a 58?" I said "yeah", pretty impressed that he got the year. Then he asks if I'm the original owner....I realize I don't look as young as I used to, but I'm 32 fer gosh sakes!!! I didn't even know how to answer that...

Guy stops by to ask my uncle to give him an idea of how much he should sell a 53 chev 1/2 ton he just inherited.

I have 3 quick stories:

1) Worked at a Montgomery Wards in In Kalamazoo, Michigan as a summer job between college semesters. Guy comes in, wanted a "Radiator Hose for a Volkswagen", I see his buddies outside. Go into the back and get a cheap hose for a foreign car. Sell it to the guy for 2 bucks, and send him out the door with the hose. Should have seen the look on his buddies faces. (;>)

2) Donavan, because the Traditional Pontiac engine started out as a much smaller engine (a 287 cubic inch engine with the same external block dimensions) and grew from there over the years to the 455 cubic inch engine size, most people say there is no "small block"/"big block engine" as the basic engine has been BOTH over the years.

There are some exceptions to any rule. Pontiac did make a 301 engine and a 303 engine, and a 366 engine which were "different". Chevrolet also made a 366 cubic inch TRUCK "Big Block" engine. As was said talking about Big Block vs Small Block is more of a Chebby thing. There were other small engine sizes but you get the point.

3) My favorite auto parts story involves Marty Palbykin and his daughter, Mary. Marty was running his Twin Turbo GTO at the time. Marty, his daughter, and I go into an auto parts store to buy a simple part for the car, a gasket or something like that.

So the counter guy (who is about the same age as Marty's daughter) starts bragging about his buddies 9 second Chevelle. Marty's daughter waits until he is done and then simply says, "My dad has run 7.40s with his Twin Turbo GTO". And we walk out of the store. Don't think the guy believe a word that she said.

I have two cute ones. Lady looking at my 72 GTO says wow thats is a great idea. I said what do you mean . She says putting a speedometer on the hood so you can see how fast you are going.
Second one in my 65 Catalina. Why did the factory put two radios in your car? Is that an am fm. I said no one is the heater controls

I have actually heard the thing about the big Pontiacs in the mid 60's having two radios before from several people. Never heard the speedometer story yet though, but not surprised.

1. Met a guy at the track w/1979 Z28 who "Could Not" get past a 16.50 ET!!! I verified he had a good combo of parts i.e. cammed engine, good heads, ignition, stall, 3.42 gears, and sticky tires. I ask, what the tune up was ie timing? "He said we got the timing dead on it starts everytime"!!! I asked him about tuning the Holley carb, "Yeah she seems to be pretty close, we weren't sure wich side of the carb was AIR and which was FUEL at first"!?!? I noticed the rockers were a bit noisy, he explained "We set the lash at .030 while the engine was running." (Very Strange adjustment for a Comp 268 hydraulic cam. LOL) I gave him insrtuctions on how to check and set his timing with a "light", how to properly adjust the valves, and how the air/fuel screws work on a Holley. He later that Summer ran mid 13's!!! LOL I had to help the fellow out!!!

A good friend of mines dad swears he owned a 1968 Camaro 327 with a 4 barrel and dual exhaust that ran *8 SECOND* quarter miles back in the day! ??? He said the key was having a POSI rearend..... ??? No amount of logic could put a dent in the memory he had of that old Camaro. I just let him continue to dream!!!

A friend's (rich) uncle used to talk to me about his replica AC Cobra -- how it had a 700hp engine and was a 7-second car, but he couldn't understand why it was running 12's in the 1/4. The car had BFG radials and suspension that had absolutely no give at all, not to mention that those cars are not the best drag car known to man. He ended up buying a "1000hp" crate engine. The car still ran 12's. Hmm...

Another friend once told me that he put a K&N filter on his car and he got 100hp increase. I suggested putting another one on to make it 200hp...

Back in early 80s a friend of my uncle had a Camaro maybe a 74-75. He didnt know crap about cars but had the money to have a 350 'built' by a local racer/shop.

He was always bragging about his 'angle plug' 202 heads,Pete Jackson geardrive,solid cam,m22 trans,456 posi,etc..

So we were somewhere at a show and some guy ask him what power valve was he running in the holley. After a few seconds of mumblin and thinking he finally says, 'Im not sure but i know its a big one'.

Your friends dad may have had the first guy you mentioned adjust his hydraulic lifters to .030 with the engine running to get that kind of time out of it LOL!

A guy at work has boasted about "building" a 454 chevy many years back, and just how bad this thing ran in his 72 Lemans that he no longer has. Goes on and on about building the whole car, it scared people because when he would launch it all you could see was sky, pull the front wheels off the ground. This same guy refers to my 72 2 door Grandville I just bought from California, super clean and original car, dash isn't even cracked, nice nice, he refers to it as my "hooptie" when he saw me get out of it in the parking lot here at work. Anyway, later I heard him slip to another guy that this monster 454 that he used to have was a stock motor that he installed a cam in. Nuff said.
