I have a 67 Pontiac and bill of sale only. I do not have any previous registration for the vehicle. I checked with the CT DMV and their records (only about 10 years back) don't show anything. I'm not sure what to do now. If I trailer car to CT inspection for VIN verification will that work? The DMV person I talked to didn't seem to know and said I would have to go further up the chain. Should I go thru a title srevice? I don't really care about a title, just want to get a regristration. Anyone familiar with the best way to get this done in CT. Any help? Thanks

They should give you temporary tags or trailer car to a DMV branch that does VIN verification. It's that easy.

CT doesn't title anything past a certain age, so most any classic gets registered without a title. If you bring them one, they're going to keep it anyhow.

If you don't have the previous registration or if it's from out of state you'll need to do the VIN check. No big deal, one of the DMV inspectors walks out checks that the VIN matches what's on the paper. If you have a previous CT registration you can skip this step.

I've done them both ways- temp plates and trailering the car in. Trailering is pain since the lot is always full- parked it a couple of doors down and then ran and got it when the inspector was ready. Trailering does save having to make 2 trips to the DMV, makes it worthwhile in my mind.

Side note, the inspectors at the Danbury office are (at least last time I was there) Pontiac guys. Last 2 cars I ran through there the inspectors stayed outside and talked cars for a bit. One of them had a Verdoro '69 Bonneville with 428 HO.

no need for a title older then 1981. just has to be a connecitcut car and a bill of sale. no emissions for anything older then 25yrs. Inspection i'm not sure about, but I don't think there is one right now.

No emissions or safety inspection on old cars anymore. Just a VIN check if the car is from out of state.

Something to keep in mind if you do have a title. Connecticut will allow you to keep the old title as long as you also have a bill of sale - they will register it with the bill of sale.

Keep an old title if you have it, some states won't accept a sale without one.

i agree with what the others said. bill of sale, new reg. form and vin verification is all you need.

just wondering, is your bill of sale from out of state? i don't know if it matters much. i always bring a CT "supplemental assignment of ownership and/or bill of sale" form (this is slightly different than the old "bill of sale" form) for the seller to sign. especially if it's an out of state car. never had a problem with using that form to register any car. also, i always take any and all documents the seller has, just in case, but have never needed to present them.

i've never had any contact with a title company. from what i've read, they do not supply you with a title. what they do is give you instruction to aquire a title from your dmv.

with that in mind, about 4 years or more ago, i spent some time searching the dmv website. i found reference to a form to apply for a title for a car that doesn't require one. of course there is a fee and it has to be reviewed by someone high up at the dmv. before a title is issued. the way i read it was, they don't have to give you one but can if they choose. and the fee is nonrefundable. never persuied it to see if i could get one.
