The VIN says the car is a 1979.

Nothing you do to the car changes that simple fact.

Put your engine in an older car, or get used to the fact that your car is never going to be a street car in California.

Yep, but look at it on the bright side: You'll be going to the land of rust free Pontiacs galore. Not to mention the land of car culture, swap meets, etc.
