any body have a fix for condisation in a garage. I have a small gap at the bottom of my garagr door but I dont think it should be enough to have it dripping of the bottom of my car and off everything else. it accually puddles up and starts to run on the floor. any ideas?

I look forward to seeing answer to this too. My garage gets tons of condensation in it to the point of coating everything, most importantly the car. I'm sure it has adverse effects on my power tools as well.

It's the change in humidity & temp - the garage is cold, the air is warm and moist - everything condenses.

I had to wipe mine completely down last night + use a floor fan blowing along the sides to help things along. The floor was pretty wet underneath as well so I'm using the floor fan on that as well. The cold temps coming in the Chicago area in the next few days will help this situation....the air won't hold so much moisture in it.

What makes it worse? Too much or too little insulation? My neighbors don't have nearly as bad a problem as I seem to.
Unless you guys are trying to give me a hint to move somewhere with a better climate?

Dealing with it also. I'm running a salamander heater and a fan to get the cars warmed up. Until you get the objects about equal to the outside ambient temperature, there will be condensation. As the air temps drop it will go away.

I've got a dehumidifier in my garage and on days like today I try not to open it.

kinda late for it now but a vapor barrier under the slap will help.
Dont go cheap on this with a new slab get the heaviest poly you can find and half lap it.

Sealing the garage will help and using a heater will keep things equal.

I insulated the walls and ceiling of my garage and have never had condensation.

Gotta leave the doors closed when the weather warms up alot. Temps here in Mi. went up 40 degrees and it got foggy (condensation). Left a garage door open for just a few hrs. and I got water dripping everywhere. My other two garages are just fine. One insulated and ones not.

My garage is insulated and has moisture barrier under the slab. When it was like it was yesterday here in Chicago, if you open the garage door more than a few moments, you're done. My car shares the garage with 2 others and I'm sure my "better half" doesn't pay any attention to how fast she gets in or out of the garage.

Humidity in a garage has little to do with how well a garage is insulated albeit aside from the inside temp affecting the dew point of the air. In simple terms the air inside the garage has a lot of moisture in it and it is condensating out. First you have to stop the air infiltration, now most people do this by insulating and placing vapour barrier on the warm side (interior)of the insulation. This traps the dew point on the outside of the vapour barrier and the outside air has no affect on the dwelling. Next you have to seal up doors and windows. Think of a bottle, if the air is dry inside the bottle and it has a cork on it then no air can enter. Once the cork is off the moist air can enter. Your garage acts in this manner. If humid air is let in through doors and windows and the temperature drops outside then the air temp inside an unheated garage will drop too. This when you get condensation and at that time it's called the dew point. The air inside the garage acts just like a nice summer day. All day it's sunny and warm, then at night the air cools off and the "Dew falls."

I use dessicant packs in the trunk, interior, and under the car.
They absorb moisture and keep the car dry. Cheap to buy, and very effective. |

My442. I do like the sound of that. Especially for the interior of the car. Maybe in the future I should store it in one of those car bags with lots of desiccant inside.

Even if your car is stored inside, condensation can still cause rust on metal parts, and corrosion on electrical contacts.
The rust proffing done at the factory was minimal, and there is a lot of unpainted areas. The Packard 56 connectors are open, unlike the modern stuff. What I do is use a product called DampRid. It comes in tubs and bags with hangers. Available at Lowes, Home Depot, and most grocery stores. I place 4/5 tubs under the car, and hand one bag in the trunk and one in the interior. You would be amazed at how much condensation is captured bt the DampRid. A lot cheaper than fixing rust. |

Sealing your slab could help the moisture level in the garage significantly. Tons of water comes out of a slab for many years. If you can seal & keep the temperature constant (insulation) inside and use a dehumidifier you might stop the majority of it. Conditioning the space is ultimately the only way to be rid of it completely. With big temp swings outside and higher humid. levels, it is a tall order in an unconditioned space though.

Agree with all the above; I do notice my garage is always warmer than the outside temp (in winter), probably due to a shared wall with the house and parking a car with a hot engine helps to heat it. The insulation tends to slow the escape of the heat.
