Ya, it's not a vehicle that you buy for the mileage. But it's got tons of power and it's very smooth. My '06 GMC was always kicking down a gear when pulling the trailered Lemans on a hill. Not with this truck.

Going to look for a new truck next month for my wife to pull her 2 horse trailer. First choice is a 5.7 Tundra reg cab, 4wd, short bed. 2nd choice 5.3 GM.

Hate me all you want but I'll take a Toyota any day of the week. I don't have a Tundra but I have a 3.4 4 Runner and they're good for 300K easily.

Like I said the Tundra is my first choice but it will come down to finances and the availabilty of a reg cab and short box. Been looking at local Toyota dealers inventory and have yet to see one. Hopefully I can order one. Still it has to be in my price range. The company I work for has a fleet of Tacoma's so I'm aware of their longevity. Since the truck will be an extra vehicle I only average 6-7 thousand miles per year. So any truck I buy will be a rust bucket ( thanks to living in good old NYS.) long before the rest of the truck goes.

I don't believe that I have seen one in that configuration. I'll bet it would look pretty cool. I'm wondering what the ride characteristic would be with a shorter wheelbase.

It is a matter of personal preference. I work in a repair facility that services all makes. If you buy any make full sized pickup truck and take care of it with proper servicing, you will get as much use out of it as you want or need. If you abuse it by not doing regular oil changes, cleaning the undercarraige, tune ups, etc, you wont get excellent service out of anything. It is all about how you take care of it. FYI the 4.7 in the new truck (yes even as big as it is compared to the previous model,) will give you a lot better real world gas mileage than the 5.7. It will still have adequate power for most situations.

What make the Tacoma's in our fleet so impressive is they don't get regular maintenence. The oil is suppossed to be changed every 5,000 miles but it never is. Fluids are never changed, maybe an air filter every now and then but I can't say for sure. No regular cleaning plus different drivers and yet they keep on running with very few problems. 2 have over 300,000 on them.

I had one with the big cab and the smaller V-8 engine. The thing was a total turd! It was slow. The gas mileage was worse than my 71 Chevy with the 396 Pontiac under the hood. Granted it was a nice truck and everything worked well. I was totally disappointed with it performance wise and mileage wise.

i second this. My father has a single cab long box 4.7l. And it has power to spare. Has pulled many heavy loads with it and not had any issues. If he was going to be towing at capacity regularly, he would of gone for the 5.7l though.

Empty he gets over 25 mpg.

I'm not drinking any Kool Aid, I've owned GM products before and had nothing but problems. Crappy tranny's, leaking intake manifolds, hub bearings, water pumps, and alternators that don't even hit 50,000 miles. I'm sorry if it annoys me that my car keeps breaking down while I'm still making payments. They had their chance to earn my business and my brand loyalty by simply producing a reliable product and they failed. I'm not one to waste my money by giving them multiple opportunities to piss on my money.

I have to agree. I was so loyal to GM, despite all the crap that they sold me. My trucks, a lousy GMC Envoy, a Cadillac CTS, it goes on

One day my brother asked me to take over his '07 Tundra. It is a double cab and he wanted a regular cab with the 8' box. He even subsidized the lease. I wasn't enthused, but agreed to try it. I soon realized that if BMW made a truck, it would perform like this one. It's tight, powerful, handles more like a sports car and is Mercedes Benz quiet. It's also one of the better looking trucks in my opinion and these thing combined likely contribute to it's highest resale value.
