Hello All
Hello Jeff, in my 68 Firebird, I used a WC GM T5 main case, a WC Mustang tail shaft housing and shifter cover. Everything stands upright, and bolts up to the OHC 6 Bellhousing, there is only a slight angle to work with for the mount. I made an aluminum Wedge to correct for the angle for the mount, and modified a TH 400 crossmember for the OEM style mount to rest on. The reason I used a Mustang Tail Shaft Housing was to position the shifter where it would be properly positioned for me, The late model F body Shifter was too far to the rear, the S-10/15 was too far forward, the Mustang was just about perfect for me. Sounds a little like the goldie-locks story doesn't it I used the Mustang SVO 2.95 First Gearset too, you can get lower First gear sets but they are very hard on the main case, as in they have a tendency to break the case between the input and countershaft bearing bores. I have heard that 3rd gear is weak in the T-5's, but I never had any trouble with it myself. Hope this Helps, Take Care Dusty PS I can get the deminsions for the shifter hole on the Firebird if you need it, I have it stashed away someplace. PSS I would go with a 10.5 inch clutch, they are more common and have added holding power. The Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch is a good one, however it is a little hard to disengage at High RPM's like 6500-7200 RPM's. Last edited by BMFH; 04-09-2013 at 09:30 PM. |

My wife, a counter person at a major parts house, came up with the cure. The set from an 88 t.a. I was all messed up because I forgot that the 350 was from a truck with an 11 inch clutch. I had fabricated all the mounts etc. so the angle was built into the new cross member in my 46. The 350 was pretty healthy and pulling around a car the weight of a 46 cpe, I'd say the t-5 is up to the challenge. The only problem I had is, even after changing over to motor oil, it still shifts like a sissy. The position of the shifter from the f-body was not too bad in the 46. Thanks for the help gang.
