1960 SD parts?
What SD parts were available in 1960?
My friend has a '60 Bonnie that has a SD based engine in it. I was told that it is a '60 SD block with later heads. It also has a aluminum tripower set up, but has 425 A stlye manifolds. Also kinda cool, it is a 4 speed car. |

1960 SD parts (incomplete list):
Block had same casting number (536387) as "regular" blocks but I believe it had special machining done to the cylinders to allow for the larger valves. Since it was over-the-counter, it would not have a serial number stamped on the block. It probably had a special engine code but I don't know what that would be, it is not listed in the MPC. Heads casting number 535461. Had larger valves, 1.92/1.66 intake/exhuast. Exhuast manifold casting numbers 535504/535505 right/left. Intake manifold casting numbers. 4 barrel - 535482 cast iron, 535889 aluminum. 3x2 cast iron 535552. Reference: http://www.pontiacsafari.com/L1Garag...eID/index.html |

The forgotten SD ...1960...
There were two Pontiac's running out of Thayer's Sinclair (back in the day) with over the counter stuff...Very neat. Never saw exhaust as the cars ran headers..I think the biggest deal was the heads & induction system and HD parts for reliability and of course the introduction of the 4 speed trans !! Thanks to Arnie..and other racers.. I "thought" the 61 510 aluminum intake was made NHRA legal for the 60.........but not for the 61 ??!!

Troy, the 510 was legal for 61s,NHRA could have made it OK for 60 but would have needed a timing cover change to match up properly.Tom

What about some of the Super Duty cars that were made pre 62? Even though the term Super duty group seems to stem from 1960, some of that group was designing and making Super Duty parts as early as 1956.

Some of them may have had the SD parts sitting in the trunk when they were delivered to a few of the big boys, but none of them rolled off the assembly line as factory assembled Super Duty cars prior to 1962.

Yes, I know about the parts as our 59 Catalina had a solid lifter cam/lifters in the trunk when it was delivered to us, but was built with all the police/taxi HD stuff that came on the car. the only thing my dad deleted was the HD brakes/15" wheels. Just thought some NASCAR cars were built that way, after all the 389 that was in our 59 was hand built. The car itself was built in Mi. and railed out to Ca. because of that and it's options. Normally a car from So. Cal. would have been built in the South Gate plant.
