Anyone paint their fuel tank ? Mines out, just finnished painting under car with Chassis Save and now i need to do fuel tank. Was thinkinh some contrast might look better than just black. I am considering Argent Silver or somewhere along those lines. Not sure how it will hold up. Maybe i'm better off just using the black chassis save so it lasts better but am not sure i have enuff left to finish it! Opinions welcome please.

I bought a new, but scratched fuel tank at a discount from a somewhat local (to me) supplier. I then painted it with a silver basecoat that I had laying around, then cleared it and am happy with the results. I applied the paint (no primer)right over the "terne-plate" plating that was already on the tank and adhesion is fine. I suspect this will last much longer than just the original terne-plate and has a very similar appearance.

I put a new tank on my firebird this winter,On the advice of others i cleaned and degreased it they sprayed a clear coat on it. looks good

eastwood makes a paint called tank tone which is a bright zinc metallic coating which according to them replicates OEM appearance and has a zinc formula that prevents corrosion. havent used it yet so cant tell much about it but eastwood has a lot of good products maybee you can check local auto paint store for simmular product

I was considering some sort of bed-liner spray for my new tank. Line-X, Rhino Lining, etc Seems like I saw it used on one of those tv car shows.

Gentlemen:

I sprayed my tank w/ silver tank tone paint. Allowed to cure and sprayed with dull clear (2) coats. Three years later - tanks still looks like the day it came out of the box.

I used Pioneer silver alum. paint for my tank & that was about 12 years ago , it looks new today. I use that brand of paint on my entire engine & have yet to have any flake off on any part of the engine yet. I like that brand of paint much better then Eastwood.

I did black paint once and with a full tank on a hot day the road heat would play hell with the fuel, making it spill out of the vents .

I used Krylon 'dull aluminum'. It doesn't smear/chalk like many aluminum paints.

I clear coated mine as I wanted stock look. It was new however. Not sure how it will stand up though.

I wonder if coating the top of the tank with something like that could help prevent squeaks or rattles against the trunk floor??

I also sprayed a layer of undercoating on the top of my tank for that reason.

use felt paper AKA 30 pound roofing tarpaper,several layers in key areas that dont show.

My tank is new. I gave it about 4 coats of flat clear after I degreased it. If you look close, you can see the bike innertube that I cut up and placed between the black straps and the tank.

Not with this car ,, but I went to the parts store for my 73T/A & when I pulled the tank down to clean & repaint it. I bought a 4 foot roll of the hook & loop (velcro) & used the fuzzy side of the velcro tape on the gas tank straps itself. It stuck right to the starp when the plastic covering on it was pulled off. It's only about an 1/8 of inch thick but the fuzzy side up against the tank keeps friction down & it worked very good as an item to help keep the squeaks down & helped to keep the tank from hitting the trunk floor directly which will keep the tank ......

If sll you do is put clear on your tank to cover it , your going to be sorry. The clear will turn yellow & every time you spill even a little bit of gas down the fill tube it will stain the outside of your tank & look terrible. If your going to paint it do it with a silver paint as it won't show as bad as the clear will.

I powder coated mine. Any powder coating shop will do a new tank that's never had fuel in it. I found one that did my tank even after I had used it for a couple of years after I washed it out thoroughly with dish soap and water. A shop that does fuel tanks will know not to get it so hot as to melt the solder in the filler neck, etc. Cost was $100 and it looks incredible. I had it done in a shiny silver and it looks about the same shade as a good header with ceramic coating looks. The powder coating is also thick enough to give some cushion under the straps. If you can afford it I highly recommend powder coating it.
