It appears that the top 4 trucks are very close in overall scores (less than 3% difference). Just released yesterday, the JD Powers Initial Quality rankings. The rankings and scores for the 6 truck manufacturers in your test above: 1. GMC - 90 2. Chevrolet - 97 3. Toyota - 102 4. Honda - 103 5. Dodge - 130 6. Ford - 131 |

Correction to above...
Ram is actually last with a score of 132. I forgot that the Ram is no longer considered a Dodge...

I Just purchased a 2012 Ram 3500 and that thing is a towing/pulling machine! It pulled a double car trailer with a weight around 10500 lbs and the Cummins never missed a beat. Totally impressed with the power, especially going thru the hills in PA last weekend. I can't wait to see how much more power it creates when I do the deletes and a tune.

I always thought they look better than the Chev, kinda like the Firebird vs Camaro.

Is it me or is GMC trying to more and more different in recent years like they were many years ago ? The GMC front end sure looks better.

Maybe I was thinking of the 10 liter. I know the KTA had three separate heads; that was really a durable engine.

If your referring to me, I averaged around 12 going out and 11 coming back. 6 spd manual trans. I rather deal with replacing a clutch than replacing or rebuilding a 6 spd auto down the road, plus whats a diesel if you can't shift it??? The truck only get a little over 14 empty so I thought that was pretty good considering the weight I was pulling.
Again, like all new diesels, because of all the emission BS, their mileage blows in stock form. From what I've read, seen, and heard, just a DPF and EGR delete with a reprogram will gain around 5-8mpg depending on who you believe and supposably wakes these motors up. I'll take 19-23 mpg on a 8000# truck. My 1500 gas never got better than 17 on the highway and around 14 in mixed driving.

Thanks.
That's not too bad for the weight towed. This is out of warranty now? The tuners used to be a 'no-no' while in warranty. Still that way?

No, still in warranty. 5yr, 100K. I'll all but void my power train warranty when I do the deletes and tune unless the issue is not related and the dealer is "friendly". The biggest issues these trucks have as well as other brands is the Emission BS that everyone deletes and reprogram to eliminate.

But there were only 17 points between 1st and 3rd - so it really was close overall. Until you look at the JD Power Quality ratings of the Ford, Ram and GMC trucks... ![]() I'm more of a GMC fan myself than a Chevy guy. They typically are a little more upscale with nicer interiors. My Dad never sold Chevy, but he did sell all the other GM brands in a 45 year career. |

I think they are. The exterior looks is why I chose the Sierra over the Silverado. The interiors were mostly identical between the two beside each other on the lot. I really hate that large fender flare on the Silverado's bed.

Hell, all the interiors on all of 'em looked about the same, so it came to me as personal taste and opinion. As I've bitched about enough on here, I don't care for any of those damn monstrosities they call consoles in all of them. Takes up too much interior room. I also don't like these really short beds so many have, I use a truck like a truck, but I think the trend is most consumers want an occasional hauler instead of the standard 8 foot truck bed. As for GMC, I know a ATHS member who's very vocal about GMC's being a different truck entirely many years ago. The rear ends he said were even heavier. Quote:
Friend recently bought a full size GMC SUV (cant remember the name of it) had a 6.0 all kinds of toys, really nice truck.

as I stated in an earlier post, I now only drive fords (except for the wifes escalade) after being a lifelong gm person. I am around guys who drive all of them on a daily basis.
as for dodge, the big complaint about them is just plain cheap built body and interior. and now they get terrible fuel mileage. front suspension wears out way to early. gm products for the most part are good until you get to the 60 to 70k and then they just seem to nickel and dime you to death. (I just thought this was normal until I switched to fords). I wont argue with the duramax and Allison combo from what I can tell they seem to have all the bugs for the most part worked out. ford, definitely built stronger. the new ford diesel released in 2011 is remarkable. you get 17 mpg with a 4 door 4 x 4 dually. put 20k behind it and you still get 12.5 to 13 mpg. as for the interior, hard to beat the king ranch for comfort and looks. |
