As with any online "community", a few simple rules can save you much pain.

Don't post personal info and don't post anything you would be embarrassed to show your mother.

Some of the younger generation already know this. My nephew deleted his FB account about 6 months prior to graduating college, knowing that potential employers would be looking for it. He didn't have anything out of the ordinary, just normal, drunk college stuff. He re-activated his FB about 6 months after he was hired.

Here's what I see as the problem with the "delete it and it's gone" strategy:

When there is (always) money involved, companies will be created to resurrect those deleted social media pages. Prime example is the "Internet Archive: Wayback Machine" http://archive.org/web/ (Take it for test run and search for an old "long gone" website and see what you find).

Doesn't take much imagination to see the same will happen with all social media and posts IMO.
