What was sold then (musically and entertainmently speaking) was being controlled by a generation that had evolved at a slower pace. (Not that that's a bad thing)
Dylan, The Beatles, etc. were artists who were taking the reins of control away from people who didn't understand their 'art' ... much like Buddy Holley would have, I believe.
Hollywood was selling Beach Blanket movies and totally ludicrous 'hippie' representations while Viet Nam and Woodstock were happening....
