I also love it when folks ask me what is under the hood. If they seem oblivious to Pontiac trivia at that point of the conversation, I'll just tell them it's a 469. I have been told "those were good motors", and of course, I have gotten the usual "oh, its the big block" and "isn't that a truck motor" when I mention 455. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy talking with folks about the car, it just gets rather amusing at times. Being the type of person who likes to mess with people, it gets really hard to hold my tongue.

When people approach me while I'm out somewhere in one of the old cars I just sort of assume they don't have a clue, but appreciate the fact that they like cars enough to talk. Given the assumption, I generally keep my answers fairly vague.
Every now and then, though, I run into someone that actually knows a thing or two... Always a pleasant surprise when that happens.

At a car show last saturday, a guy asked if the 428 in my 66 GTO was a Ford engine. Caught me off guard, didn't have time to think of any smart-a$$ answer, so I just said "no its a Pontiac 428". He said "huh, never heard of a Pontiac 428".
Another guy walked by later and while discussing my car, I told him that I have owned it for 32 years, bought it while I was in high school. His response, "did you buy it new?" (Keep in mind that I was born in March 1966, the same month my GTO was made, and I look younger than I am, so I'm told). I said no, that would have been in 1983. I bet that I have been asked the "did you buy it new" question about 10 times in the past two years.
