I have an extra set of grilles for my 69 Lemans that I've been cleaning up and I found a couple of small stress cracks on two of the mounting tabs. I was wondering what is the best way to repair these I was thinking maybe a soldering iron and gently melt them back together or epoxy them? Has anybody else Had to deal with this?

i use a wood burner, theres a bunch of tips on the modern burners...its prob the best repair there is in my mind...after all it is thermal set plastic...and welding it back together works.

I'd love an education in plastic repair. I have the original shroud for my 68 that has a very nice, clean, perfectly broken section out of it and I'm determined to use that part on the car. The piece fits back in so nice it's tempting to think I could just glue ...but that's probably not the case.

Things like grills, TA flares, and other rigid plastics used on our cars are usually ABS plastic. The best repair I have found for that is Oatey ABS cement. It is easily available at Home Depot or any hardware store, usually in the plumbing area by the PVC cement, and is sandable and paintable. Buy the cleaner/primer too as is softens the plastic and helps adherence. For larger breaks, I V'ed out the crack and built up the cement and sanded it smooth. Works great.
http://www.oatey.com/products/plasti...ey-abs-cements Radiator shrouds are polypropylene. There are no glues or epoxies that adhere to it. For this I have a small plastic welding kit from Urethane Supply Company that works great (takes a little practice though). These kits include various types of plastic rods and are on EBay for around 180. Used ones show up often too for less. I have seen this exact same kit with both the Mac and Matco names on them as well. I think UBS is the actual maker of them. http://www.urethanesupply.com/Airless-Welders-1/5600HT/

For a professional repair on plastic from a professional ......get a tube of 142 Fusor and a spray can of their surface modifier ....you scuff both pieces with 180 grit paper that are to be joined together .....then spray one light coat of the surface modifier (spray can)..let flash for 5-10 minutes......then apply 142 Fusor....you only have about 90 seconds before it "kicks" so have your manure together before you apply it !! Your Welcome

The PVC glue is for PVC plastic. I wouldn't use it on ABS and definitely won't work on PP.
I've heard good things about the Fusor stuff but still don't think it will work on PP. I also think it is overkill for ABS, but it is another option.

I have not come across any plastic .....that the 142 won't bond...problem plastics included. I have been using it for the last 20 years in the Collision Repair Business. Just trying to give the OP some solid advise on experience .....

ive been using fusor for 20 years too...and its great if you have easy access to it..but to buy a $30 to 50 dollar tube..then buy a gun... and to never use it again is expensive
wood burners are less than $10 at hobby lobby with 6 or 7 bits/tips its easy, anyone with a little practice can do it..if you need filler rod, shave a little off an edge that you cant see, like in the back or bottom......easy

For $20 you can buy a 1.7 oz bottle of high quality locktite UV curing adhesive. Although I doubt any of it would work on Polypropylene.
