Why would not paying registration be a problem? Reggie expires, throw the plates away ...end of story. It's not like you HAVE to have a car registered if it's not being driven.

Ton of reasons not to have an actual title ... in NY they don't issue titles for vehicles in the 60's. Just transferable registration after they take your original title.

I never worry about the actual paper title ... have the VIN run before you buy, most State Police will do that ... no hits, no worries, proceed from there. Have it titled mail order, perfectly legal, transfer title to the new state, no problem.

Outside the collector car market very, very few people have paper titles for a 60's, 70's car parked out back for the last 25 years.

I still have the original title for my 68 from Tenn. Car hasn't been registered in 30 years .... NY would register it in 15 minutes .... but they would TAKE the original paper title ... so of course if I ever register it in NY I would try to use a photocopy. Not going to give up the original piece of paper.

I've titled and registered tons of vintage bikes that had nothing, zippo, nada ... not a single piece of paper work except a bill of sale. Now they are happily plying the roads of New England perfectly legal.

It differs by state, it sounds like, but in California you do. If you're not driving it, you pay a smaller annual fee to register it as "non-operable." If you don't pay it for 20 years, it adds up with penalties, fees, etc. Something to keep in mind if you're buying a car in California that you ever plan on registering here.
