Yep, that was probably 1975, the 2nd year of the IROC Series and first year of running the Camaro..

I should have completed the story. And here is my Chevelle seven years later (1972).
![]() ![]() ![]() I got it in 1981 and by 1984 I had saved it. My friend who helped me locate it wanted to part it out..... I restored it again in 1987 and finished it the second time in 2000. Wish I had some photos of the GTO when we pulled it out of my cousin's back yard and over the years when I blew it apart and as I rebuilt it. I really didn't start getting photos of the work until digital cameras came along, but since the project spanned 23 years, a lot of the work happened before they came around.

Oh, most certainly. In the first photo you can see the driver's side rear rail pointing up at a steep angle. I had started a 65 Chevelle project in 1979 and my original project car was slightly rusty so I had collected two rear quarters, a trunk floor and a trunklid, all original GM sheetmetal. So when this car, a real numbers matching L79 car, was located it wasn't a tough decision to turn my first car into a parts donor and use my collected sheetmetal and NOS trim to restore the L79 car. It was a high mileage car (140,000) but since it had only been on the road for 7 years, it wasn't rusty at all. I landed a frame out from under a California car and used my collected sheetmetal to bring it back.
Still all numbers matching and has a Protect-O-Plate as well as original dealership paperwork. Seeing as it was retired from the road in 1972 it was also amazingly complete with almost all of the hard to find L79 bits still with the car. The only original parts I never got were the original wheels and hubcaps, dashtop clock and the coil bracket. I'm not sure the original owner ever even got the wheels and caps since it appears to have been delivered with chrome reverse wheels. The clock got lost by the previous owner who had tried to rebuild it and the coil brackets were in a stupid location and often removed and tossed in order to mount the coil on the firewall. Anyway, I was able to find nice wheels (very common), NOS hubcap centers and nice used cap shells, a good used clock that worked and a coil bracket which now are very hard to find.

Quite severely, I'm sure. Did you use a rear clip, or pull it and piece it together? |
