Arguably for sure. I would rather be in a F4U or if I wanted to go really fast a DO335.

I can't see any Bomb Racks under the wings so I would think they are not A-36's but
P-51A's The Army A/F did use about 1000 of that model in China

Yeah, I started to go into the 'maybe they are A models' but I'd already typed enough...lol. Good observation on the bomb racks. The only clue I would have known to look for would have been dive brakes but not visible in that pic.

U47, yes, there are about a half dozen planes that need to be in that 'best' conversation..... Prop driven aircraft design was at it's very peak during those years..

Yes, FW 190 long nose, F-8 Bearcat, Sea Fury, Hawker Tempest & Typhoon.
P-51 look-a-like, the Yak 3.

Funny Harley Earl gets excited seeing the twin booms on P-38 and incorporates them into Cadillac tail fins of the late 40's to mid 60's, however P-38 is a old late 1930's design and first flown in Jan-1939. It was our best pre ww2 fighter that bested the P-40 and the F4F especially in the high altitude arena. It had about a 64 mph advantage in speed over them too.
But that DO335 and it's 474mph speed wow!

What I used to fly and work on. Faster that most of the WW2 fighters;
P2V Neptune or P2V-7, V-P 65. Two 3350" eighteen cylinder turbocharged compound radials @ 3,700 hp and twin Westinghouse J-34 turbojet engines.
